Murphy's Law of 'anything that can go wrong, will go wrong'.

The exact reason why I like to pack as little as possible, if and when I gig. Fewer moving parts means fewer broken pieces.
Never learnt that one despite repeated trouble. Had a Dual Rec & a JCM2000 blow at gigs, having previously only used them at home volumes. Oops.

Honestly, if I were to gig again, I'd probably get a sturdy solid state amp and blow people away with my hot blues licks via my Pink Strat and Peavey amp.

Dive bombs aside, what are people doing in live shows where your guitar gets wildly out of tune between songs?

(Apart from the time I left my guitar in a freezing car boot straight into a hot room for a show)
Dive bombs are sort of 80% of the reason to have a Floyd Rose.

But dive bombs do not make a Floyd-equipped guitar go out of tune. You can do them all night with impunity.

What makes a Floyd-equipped guitar hopelessly, unrecoverably, uselessly out-of-tune is a broken string. And this is a thing that can occasionally happen, and if it does, you’re fucked. You cannot play on 5 strings. The entire guitar becomes completely broken.

But the thing is, with a Floyd, it doesn’t even NEED to be anything that drastic to cause havoc. It’s hard to explain unless you’ve had one, but... the entire thing is this incredibly delicate balance.

You think “oh, this high E is just a bit flat, let me give it a little twist here.” So you get that string in tune, and now the other five are just a bit flat. So you tune them up and now the high E is just a little bit flat again, unless you accurately guesstimated and over-shot by the right amount on each of the other five strings.

Basically, it keeps trying to compensate for every move you make. It’s part of what makes it stay in tune regardless of what you do to the bar. It’s extremely well-engineered at keeping the same total amount of tension on the system.

But... it becomes a tail-chasing exercise of epic proportions of one little thing needs to change. It’s just the nature of the beast.

I never owned a guitar with the system until two or three years ago. I “got it” instantly, why these things were everywhere in their heyday. It’s almost worth the PITA. It’s so incredibly expressive and liberating. It’s such a distinctive sound; nothing else is really like it, both what it does to the basic guitar sound and what you can do with one.

There is nothing "super" about a Floyd, other than annoying.

Haha, they ARE super annoying. But I think there are other things that are super about them too. I've definitely changed my tune since owning one.

This thing I did last week... it was just so fucking perfect. Everyone in the room was ecstatic at the result. Worth every penny (and every hour of tuning), to me.

Whatever works!

I also love and hate floyds. Tuning them really sucks. And if I were Eddie Van Halen and had some poor yutz on contract to do all that fiddling around instead of me, I'd probably have no reservations about them either! Because them things are fun. Using him as an example again, listen to the solo he plays on "top jimmy". Like, mid rockout he just does this complete turnaround and starts making crazy whale noises and lugubrious warbles that don't seem to have much to do with the song but it still works, and it's just him probably wasted doing this bizarre trip just not giving a fuck. It's kind of like I imagine suddenly being able to levitate and fly around would be, there's this new dimension of movement that you're capable of when you're wanging around on a floyd. Anything that lets you make new kinds of sounds is a good thing. If a bear to set up properly.

I had a Floyd on one of my guitars back in the 80s (duh!), and it was a huge PITA. A friend had a Kahler-equipped Hamer, and holy shit, that thing was fucking magic.

It made me want to dump the Floyd and switch, but really, its better if you get a guitar with one built for it. Which is why, I think, the Floyd ruled the roost. Much easier to retrofit.

Update!

This guy STILL rips... Stock? Nope, of course not. The frets were pretty awful and not even evenly crowned... ::) But I did all the fret work it needed, and the nut, tuners, and string trees were of course awful. But hey, $20 in parts later, plus the Gotoh tuners I already have, and, well, this guitar is just as good as any one of my other guitars.

I also just bought a used GFS Surf 90, so after all of this I have less than $200 in it and I'll have a great guitar that I will enjoy non-ironically. It's just a good guitar!
