New (all) Rosewood Neck Day

Post by Jonesie » Mon Apr 27, 2020 4:55 pm

Well, I have this Telecaster that my father in law built the body for. It's a one piece spalted maple body and had an aftermarket Godin (or so I was told) made Telecaster neck, it was SUPER thin, had kind of a weird shape, and just never felt great. The holes stripped out on the base of the neck, so I took this as an opportunity to justify buying a neck that I actually liked.

I found this WD all rosewood neck last week on Reverb, it's a 2 piece neck, the fingerboard is separate, but it's barely noticeable in the grain. I got a hilarious deal on it, just comically low priced.

Anyways, it got here today, and I honestly do love it. It is incredibly chunky. The specs say .96" at the first fret, 1" at the 12th fret with dunlop 6105 frets. This thing is smoooooooooth. There's something about a neck with no finish on it. It's just silky. The neck plays great, I had a set of GFS locking tuners that fit right in there without modification, so that worked out. The previous owner said the nut was "rough cut", well, it's perfect for me. Doesn't bind, perfect height. I have a set of 11 - 52's on it, and it plays like it has 9's. It's really something else.

Oh, and it looks gorgeous.

That's fantastic.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

I'm curious to try a rosewood neck sometime, I imagine it's slinky.

That really is nice, the woods match up really well on it. Congratulations on making something nice even better.

I don’t remember ever playing a rosewood neck, but I would think they’re fantastic, I love rosewood fretboards.

I’m pretty sure this thing I’m feeling is called ‘jealousy’...?

Seriously though, goddammit that’s beautiful. Congrats!
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

If it helps, the maple body makes the guitar bright as fuck, think a Jag or solid body Ric. It does a thing, but it isn't necessarily a Tele thing. I plugged the guitar in last night and the bridge pickup suddenly wasn't working too, I went over everything and couldn't find what was up with it, so I ended up buying a wiring harness for it. We'll see if the rosewood neck mellows the tone at all (but I think it's going to do the opposite...) Neck pickup sounded great though, and that's just a Squier Classic Vibe neck pickup, bridge is a Duncan Broadcaster.

I actually just weighed it for the first time, 9.1 lbs. I always thought it was a bit heavier than that, but guess I was wrong.

It's a really solid and dense piece of maple for the body. No contours or round over edges either.

Yeah, that’s not nearly as heavy as it could be given the construction.

That's what I'm thinking it is. It's an old GFS switch, and I've re-soldered it a bunch of times. I'm happy to switch out the wiring harness so I don't have to deal with the rats nest that I made in there.

I just got an all-rosewood musikraft neck for my parts JM, I'll have to post pics tomorrow or something. The neck is actually lighter than the maple neck it replaced. It feels fantastic and is way smoother than the satin nitro on the maple neck.

That looks fantastic! The all-rosewood necks are a dream to play.

They look great on Teles too, ;)
