I couldn't agree more. My old lead player had a Dano one and would use it in all sorts of cool places without falling back on the "clean compressed Byrds thing." My favorite was when he busted it out when we'd cover this song:

I like how King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard uses 12-string in their music. It works well with a bit of fuzz.
Also, Thee Oh Sees uses one to great effect. It's a great fit in fuzzed out garage rock in general.
I also like it with just a touch of dirt, such as in this fantastic song by Land of Talk:

I was browsing Facebook Marketplace last year (as one is wont to do) when I spotted a poorly submitted ad with the image of what appeared to be the back of a fireglo Rick 360/6, asking €1000. Seemed too good to be true, read up as much as I could about spotting fake Ricks. Drove to check it out - the guy selling was probably late teens. Seemed legit, the guitar just had a little binding separation and buckle rash from a previous owner. Tuning was pretty unstable, but for the most part everything checked out. I asked why he was selling it (and I kid you not): "Can't play Nirvana on it, bought a Cobain Jaguar and need the money." Quickly gave him the cash and moved on.
Since then I had it set up, and it wears 11s now. Clean the hi-gains are kinda weak sounding, but with a comp or touch of drive they've really sound quite full and complex. The neck is pretty dark, but certainly not unusable for jazzy-toned lines and chords. I'm no Rick purist, but since owning one I've been discovering some of my favourite riffs were recorded with Rick hi-gains (No Surprises by Radiohead, What Difference Does It Make by The Smiths).
There's something in the attack and short decay that really sits right with my playing style. And to have one hanging around your neck, definitely feel like the coolest person in the room.

I’ve always been a dedicated fender fanboy but had been wanting a rickenbacker for years on end (couldn’t gather to cash to buy one) until this year my wife put a down payment on one at a local shop forcing me to buy it.. It’s a 1979 rick 450/12. I love it. Has the hi gains which To my ear sound pretty damn good. Moving from a modern mim jazzmaster and tele necks it definitely takes a bit of getting used to but it just feels so sturdy and sounds so good. It also looks amazing so I always want to pick it up. Worth every penny. You’ll get used to the skinny neck. There’s no other guitar that comes close to the sound imo!

I've owned for about 10 years this Rick 330, coincidentally I had stopped playing for most of this timeframe as I moved abroad and left my band. I found it to be too uncomfortable for me to casually play it at home, so I sold it and funded my Jazzmaster. Neck shape, body size, and fretboard finish were the things I liked the least, but it sounded and looked great.

Lockdown saw two Rics arrive for me. Absolutely smitten by them so thought I’d share / bump this thread.
First up is a 1988 330. I love it. So lively, and a joy to play. Bridge pickup with some drive is a glorious thing. It’s got a fair bit of play wear and finish checking, and the mapleglo has really yellowed in a way that I’m a big fan of.
So taken was I with it, that impulse got the better of me and I bought a new 620. I mean, look at. Sounds subtly different to the 330; a little more low / mid to it. Neck is a fair bit bigger too. I genuinely couldn’t part with either of them, and they now sit proudly alongside my 62 Jaguar.

I love them. Good score. The 330 looks really good with the yellowed Mapleglo, and the 620 always looks great in Jetglo.
Does the 620 have a lot more sustain? I've never directly compared them, but I always figured it would, with the neckthrough design.

Forgot to share that I ended up getting a new 2020 360 like I had mentioned before! Have had it for about three months now and it's unlike any guitar I own. At first I was kinda turned off by how light it was, almost feeling like a toy, but I've grown to enjoy that for my back since I'm used to 8+ lbs guitars. The feel is also something to get used to with everything being so glossy, and the lacquer fingerboard is strange at first but I got used to it and appreciate how it kinda makes you play differently (the string spacing also being a factor).
The QC is a bit lacking though, but I kinda expected that given how modern-day Rickenbacker's reputation seems to be. The binding is a bit messy in certain parts, and the cat eye sound hole was
really messy to the point I had to take some sandpaper and a Xacto knife/razor blade to remove the specks of finish bleed. Not to mention that the original R tailpiece had imprinted itself into the finish underneath. I got this buffed out though, and switched to a more traditional tailpiece. I did not like the hi-gains, so I swapped in some Creamery replacements (both underwound, alnico neck, ceramic bridge). Lastly, changed the knob to a metal chrome one and shielded the PG and PU cavities.
I think if anyone is on the fence on buying a Rick, getting a used one is probably your best bet. That being said... I pre-orded a 2021 Autumnglo 4003, so I guess I didn't learn my lesson at all. All in all, these guitars are fucking awesome and have a unique feel. I won't be letting this one go.

I can’t rid myself of 360 gas! How are the Creamery pickups? Am I correct in thinking you’ve basically chosen a toaster bridge and a hi-gain neck? My 330 sounds absolutely great, but as a consequence I’d maybe consider new pickups for the 620 as it doesn’t shine in quite the same way (despite sounding very nice in its own right)
