Dot Studio vs Jazzmaster

Post by Jazzmonster Jones » Sun Jun 14, 2020 2:00 pm

I listen to too many people on the web maybe....
I have always been under the impression that JM were "bright, jangly guitars". (likewise Jags)
I have just blessed myself with my first JM, and compared to my Epi Dot Studio, the JM is BOLD and punchy.

Yes, I CAN get a "jangly" sound with the JM, but I can also get a hundred other sounds out of it that I can't even approach with my Dot.

Am I complaining? HELLS NO!!!! Just thinking out loud.

Also- the "tone" roller seems to be more of a mid/bass cut, than a conventional "tone" knob that rolls off treble. Am I in the ballpark with this thought?

Yeah, I started out playing semi hollow guitars thinking they would be warmer sounding, and while they often are that’s not always what I want. At worst they are muddy.

You really have to be intentional about it if you want to make a Jazzmaster muddy.

A JM is my favorite guitar to play for lead-type playing. Lots of expressive possibilities.

The rhythm circuit can be really fun with fuzz. It can help tame the shrillness and bring out the vocal/nasal qualities.
