Anybody like sunburst? I seem to.

For guitars of the straight waisted variety (or reverse offset).

It's a design I've been toying with that's a reworked strat shape (rounder butt, shallower horns..) with a custom vibrato that is an evolution of the Mustang/JM hybrid I made in real life. This is a rendering of a digital model. I've yet to build it (or any other guitar) in real life.
oh wow haha, I thought it was real...

I think it's really cool and you should build it. Has the vibe of a Jansen or a Mory or something. Obvious Fender derivation but not an exact copy

I seem to like (sun-)bursts too!

Image

My first (more or less) expansive guitar - the Gibson Les Paul Studio 60s Tribute - together with my only really expensive guitar - my Fender 50th Anniversary FSR Thinline Jaguar (with some mods and upgrades over the time) and the first guitar I apparently bought to have a back up guitar with similar features to the Jaguar - my recently modified Eastwood Sidejack Deluxe.
They all share some more or less similarities and key features - 2x 24,75" 1x24", 3xP 90 2x open covers, 2x offset vibrato 2x modded, 1x stock 2x sunburst 1x honeyburst, 2x sidejack.
Love them all!
Already thought about putting a Duesenberg Les Trem on the Les Paul - so that I maybe play it more! As I always reach into empty space searching for the vibrato bar...

Target burst is IMHO the worst idea ever, but some people love it.
The main reason I enjoy a burst finish, is that you can see the grain. Target burst doesn't work for me. The burst pattern alone isn't enough for me. I need the grain visible.
I had a couple opportunities to grab an AV65 locally, but they were target burst. I just couldn't. They looked good in pictures, but up close, I just couldn't see the point in it at all.
Hesitated on an Oly White and it got sniped.
Maybe, I should have sucked it up and grabbed the target burst, to see if it would grow on me.

It's got that cheap Raven or Saturn brand look.

The three tone burst used during CBS and on the AV65 models. It's three solid colors without any grain showing through at all.

Target Burst. Instead of using a semi-transparent stain that showed the grain, Post-CBS Fender switched to an opaque finish that hid it. Reminds me of a cheap catalog guitar.

Exactly. It's a downgrade in appearance from their pre CBS sunburst.
I'm fine with the other CBS changes, such as the headstock, binding, blocks, etc.
I don't understand what they were thinking, unless they really wanted to use up bodies unfit for transparent finishes. Cut cost on wood, but add cost elsewhere with the added neck appointments?

I agree about the semi-transparent finish, especially over the right grain, like ash. I find myself not liking natural grain finishes on guitars as much as a colored see-through, I guess the color adds another dimension as opposed to just clear.

Ah ok thanks.
Right yeah, I sometimes wish my CIJ JM was nitro - but now you've pointed that out I realise that one big plus point is that the grain of the wood shows through really nicely.

It appears that Gibson and Epiphone in the 50s and 60s had different styles of burst on their acoustics.
Epiphone seemed to be a consistent burst over the entire body, where as Gibson bursts had that dominating darker colour at the upper and lower bouts. (this is also apparent in the Gibson and Epiphone thinlines).

While at first blush the dark finish on the upper and lower bouts of the Gibsons appears black or almost black, on closer examination and in bright light it appears to be a dark brown over the red that produces this dark effect. Obviously Gibson cherry bursts are just the cherry colour.

Given that the red in the cherry bursts one sees from this period is generally still quite vibrant, it is interesting that the red in the (3 tone) bursts always appears quite subdued. Yeah this may be a fading effect, similar to that on 3T Fender sunbursts, but I think it is also that the red in the Gibson 3T bursts was always subdued.

One of the Epiphones pictured below has what can only be described as a Gibson style burst. As per Fender it seems anything and everything could have happened in the 50s and 60s at Kalamazoo.

[Please excuse the reflections, it is near impossible to take phots with out any. All shots were taken within a 10 minute period and the sunlight remained consistent throughout]
