NGD x2 (Lefty Content Warning)

Post by Shadoweclipse13 » Sun Jul 19, 2020 11:50 pm

Being lefty, someone who loves working, and because of this forum inspiring me to like oddball guitars, it's weird to think of buying a guitar. Even weirder to find a lefty that's not a Strat or Tele with boring colors in the wild. I walked into my local guitar shop (Cream City Music (no affiliation)) to get some strings for my custom Tele Custom, and found one of the lefty Squier Classic Vibe Jazzmasters. Having never played a Jazzmaster, realizing that the JM sound is what I've loved for years (without knowing it early on), and wanting that sound pretty bad, I had to give it a test. So, I sat down with it at the shop, and plugged into a Marshall Origin (Origin 5 or 20? not sure). And I finally get the hype and love of these things from all you fine people. Granted, it's not a vintage or exceedingly high-priced model, but damn this thing is awesome.

Image

-The pickups are ok, but not amazing. I've had my ear on a set of Novaks for a while (JM-FAT for bridge, JM-V for neck), but I'm gonna sit on the factory "Fender-designed" ones for a little bit, just to see how I like them long-term.

-I immediately put a set of medium gauge strings (0.11-0.48) on them (knowing this is a thing, just from years of reading things here on OSG ;) ), and that plays nicer already.

-The vibrato arm is fairly loose in the collet, but I've had a Staytrem collet and arm for a few years now. I've also got an American Pro vibrato (with a trem lock, which the Classic Vibe doesn't have), but I've also considered the Swope Descendant IF I don't like the factory vibrato. Again, gonna sit on that one for a little while too.

-I believe that the bridge is a Mustang bridge (or similar) as the saddles have a single string groove and no height adjustment. I'm just realizing that as often as I read threads on here about what parts are what and why, I don't remember all the information. Now that information is suddenly relevant, and it's a little weird. Haha. I like the bridge though so far.

-This is my first proper Fender/Squier neck. I've never played a straight 9.5" radius and I like it so far. "Slim C" as it's described feels really nice too. I was worried because my Tele Custom is a Warmoth, and I've gotten really used to the 10"-16" compound radius. I'm glad that so far it doesn't feel weird, or at least weirder than a brand new guitar I'm not used to yet would feel.

-I'm gonna get an anodized guard for it pretty quick, even though it doesn't hum very bad at all. I like the look of the anodized, and think that it would help with hum anywho, so why not. Considering black or bare (silver-colored).

-I'm also gonna order a set of 3D-printed pickup covers, possibly in orange 8)

-Already switched the Strat knobs for a set of white witch hats I've had sitting around for a little bit.

-Also need to find a cool strap for it. To the Souldier website!

I'll post some pictures of my upgrades when I do a few more little things.

For my second NGD! I posted a thread asking about them a while ago, and have been busy, so I didn't make a post. I thought doing these 2 together would make it easier. I sold my old Seagull S6 cedar-topped acoustic after I'd fallen out of love with it. I don't play acoustic much anymore, and really wanted a parlor/small-bodied acoustic, but damn they are hard to find lefty. I found a lefty Alvarez AP70 parlor on Reverb. It was technically used, but the guy said that he bought it and never played it. It still had the factory tags proclaiming string types and such on it :w00t: A little discount, but at least less than the factory sold it for.

I'm not sure what type of bracing is inside, etc., but it plays VERY well. Sounds very full for a small guitar, which I think could be due to the body wood. I believe it was mistakenly listed as walnut, but from reviews I've seen around, it might be rosewood back and sides with a sitka spruce top. One review said that they were made with mahogany, but maybe that was a different/specific AP70 parlor. I'm not sure, but it sounds damn nice. A bit of a tighter sound, than the boomier/bassier Seagull S6 dreadnought I was used to. I've been into the modern folk revival of the last few years (Lumineers, Vance Joy, Of Monsters And Men), and the tighter sound is more my cup of tea.

Nothing needs to be done to it, though I did get a sweet Souldier strap for it 8)

Also, small aside, I was SHOCKED to see that Cream City also had a lefty Firebird in stock too :w00t: :w00t: In my excitement, I forgot to try it out, which is a shame. I've never played a lefty Gibson/Epiphone before since they are also fairly rare in the wild. Maybe I'll go back in a couple weekends and play it for the hell of it.

Loving your work, my lefty brother!

I always get extra excited when i see lefty content. How you resisted the Firebird as well i’ll never know!

Enjoy!

Thanks dude ;D I do too! We don't see lefty content TOO often, though more often as more of us have been popping up in the last couple years.

I was REALLY excited to try the Firebird (think it was a reverse which I don't like as much as NRFB), mostly to see how I liked the pickups, but after getting that excited to find a JM I liked, everything else went out of my head.

As a side-note, my almost-daughter (girlfriend's daughter who I've known since she was 1) is also lefty and found this adorable Fender ukelele in Lake Placid Blue with a PAINTED Tele headstock for $170. I wanted to grab it for her SO bad, but it was righty and I know next to nothing about uke's. I didn't know how bad it would be to flip the nut to lefty (it had a weird taper to the neck at the headstock, where the nut at the 4th string was taller than at the 1st string). I need to do some research. Having a painted headstock on a uke was awesome. That said, looking at all the stuff they had, she and I both preferred the acoustic tenors they had over the ukeleles. Need to do some research there too.

Nice! I like the bridge on that Alvarez, something different.

I'm a big fan of Souldier straps (and own a few) but I'd consider a Mother Mary strap too, they make some really cool ones:

I own one of these:

I agree!! The Alvarez bridge kind of makes the design. I read somewhere that there was some interesting engineering for that shape, but I don't remember where I saw that.

Those Mother Mary straps are epic!! I tend to like vintage type patterns for straps (I'll get a picture of all of my straps so far, one of these days), but for my JM I am strapless and undecided!! I'll check them out!

Very nice! I built a JM with the Duncan designed pickups in a loaded squier body, not being a pickup afficianado I couldn’t find any reason to change them. Having seen the tremolo on a lefty body I think I would like to install that on a righty body!

I have also found Alvarez guitars to be a good value, post a picture of the back and I’m sure the wood can be identified .

Nicely done. I dig smaller acoustics, and that Alvarez is sharp looking.

You're talking about making a lefty guitar from a right-handed body, with a lefty trem? Like a JM version of a Super Sonic? That would be cool as hell.

I emailed Alvarez with the model and serial, and this is the reply I got:
This was manufactured in China in December of 2018. It has a solid spruce top with laminate walnut back & sides. The neck is mahogany, the fingerboard & bridge are rosewood. MSRP was $599 whne new for the only lefty parlor model at that time.
So it looks like everything I read was at least partially correct. Haha.

Thanks man! I'm really loving it so far. From hearing some of the descriptions of acoustic sizes and their corresponding sound descriptions, I was worried that I wouldn't like the sound as much as a dreadnought-style, but I really do.

Also, for reference, here is my almost-daughter with that adorable LPB Fender ukelele with matching Tele headstock! I kinda love the anonymity with masks these days ;)

I know how it is, brother--great to see a happy find-a-good-lefty-in-a-shop story. Rare.

A few years ago, I was at the (now closed) Gibson factory demo room in Memphis, and they had about a DOZEN lefties hanging on the wall. I spent about 90 minutes in heaven.

They've relocated the hollowbody builds to the Nashville shop (grrrr), so it might be worth a visit.
