Yes, the fretboard was a little dry but nothing out of the ordinary for a new instrument. It picked up some oil easily. The laurel board has a somewhat lighter brown shade compared to the rosewood board on the ES and it has lots more pores. Still it's a nice fretboard, I like the figuring and don't mind the lighter tone as it matches well with the tone of the finish.

To call back a few pages. I count 3 plies. 2 thicker maple and a skinny one made of something else. That's what they were doing right before this series, so it tracks.
If it wasn't for disappointment, I wouldn't have any appointments.

For those that've played on any of these, how did you find the weight and balance?
I fear my neck/shoulder issues are here for the long haul and may need to consider a new approach.

My lower back is fucked. I always play sitting down. Even light weight guitars..

How is the neck on that Riviera? I hope they're not using the terrible, skinny D shape that they're used for years on a variety of models.

The neck is not at all like the terrible D shape you describe. It's more like a C shape and string spacing is not at all cramped. It is maybe slightly fuller than a modern Fender neck but nowhere near the '59 style baseball bat I am not very fond of. In comparison my CS '61 335 has a similar but slightly slimmer shape but be aware that the thin neck is a specific feature of the '61 model.

Good to hear. Those Epi D necks are the worst. That feature alone has held me back from owning a Casino for years.

Found a cheap CHEAP new Crestwood Custom locally and couldn't resist. If you get one thats had its frets taken care of and had a good setup (like this one), they are incredibly good guitars.

nice score. I had one of the older crestwood reissues from 5,6 years ago and i stupidly regret trading that one away. Crestwoods are aweomse and those mini humbuckers are just great.
Also just to piggyback on this thread yesterday i snapped up a used Epiphjone '61 SG reissue (with maestro vibrola trem). Man it's pretty killer too. REally nice sounding pickups and plays amazing.
Epiphone hit it out of the park with these 2020 models.

I got mine new for $525.00, a guitar that inexpensive shouldn't be this good. Aside from a single flaw in the finish where the neck meets the body and a drop of poly collected, this guitar is perfect. Aside from the Les Trem and a roller bridge that I added this weekend, it's stock and perfect. The electronics and pickups on every other Epiphone I've played have been trash, but this one is so good that I'm not modding it further (okay, I may change the pickguard, but that's it.) and I've modded the crap out of every other guitar I've owned.Larry Mal wrote: ↑Fri Nov 27, 2020 8:28 amI happened to watch this review of the new Epiphone Firebird.
For the most part, the Firebirds that Epiphone has made over the years haven't been very good or really anything close to what a Firebird is supposed to be. I'm talking about major differences like set neck instead of through-body construction and all that.
But it seems clear that Epiphone now simply makes guitars that are more or less the same as Gibson does, since you can see in this video that they are using a genuine 9-ply laminate in the through-body portion of the Epiphone Firebird now. That's not only accurate, but it's also quite a bit more expensive than it has to be.
I could still quibble with some of the choices here, like the Grover tuners, however I also see those on Gibson Firebirds right now so it seems kind of like while Gibson is giving with one hand it's also taking away with the other here.
But anyway, a Firebird for $600 is something I never really thought I would see.
