Re: Rickenbacker on backorder
Played a fireglo 360 recently at Long McQuade. Mrs. Boring said No Way, but it sounded great.
Still waiting for a Jetglo 330.
Neck stopped feeling weird rather quickly and the pickups sounded great with fuzz and distortion.
I played some obligatory Fugazi (Waiting Room) The Jam, and a Townshend riff.

Re: Rickenbacker on backorder
This thread and others like it have caused me to go into a GAS-spiral thinking about a RIC 12-string. You know, because I don’t already have a 12-string and can convince myself that I need something “different” from my other guitars. Oh no!

Re: Rickenbacker on backorder
Rickenbackers may be some of the most polarizing guitars around, but nothing else makes that sound. It's a very specific tool for a specific purpose and you can't really duplicate that with anything else.
They are quirky but iconic, and easily my favorite guitars. I also love the fact that there is no such thing as a watered-down imported budget version of a Rickenbacker. You see a Rick, and know it came from the same factory / same family-owned company that has been producing guitars in the USA since 1956.
As for the necks, I guess some people struggle with the normal neck width (which is 1-5/8" wide, same as a Fender B neck!), but you know who didn't struggle with it? Harrison, McGuinn, Townshend, Petty, Weller, Buck, Marr etc. I find it quite comfortable, especially for thumb-over playing.
Rickenbackers have had a back-order for most of the company's history (seriously, back in the 60s you had to wait a few months). So not a huge concern, and actually that back-order has really helped the company weather some storms in the past, such as the '09 Great Recession and Covid last year.

so true. sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, you can find someone on a guitar forum complaining about Rickenbacker playability despite a fairly convincing body of evidence to the contrary. it's like the old Yogi Berra saw about the popular restaurant: "nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded."Highnumbers wrote: ↑Tue Mar 02, 2021 12:17 pmAs for the necks, I guess some people struggle with the normal neck width ... but you know who didn't struggle with it? also, you forgot Marty Willson-Piper

Ah, of course! The Church, what a legendary band and Willson-Piper probably had the best use of an e-Bow that I've ever seen, sounds great with a 12-string.dc wrote: ↑Tue Mar 02, 2021 1:16 pmso true. sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, you can find someone on a guitar forum complaining about Rickenbacker playability despite a fairly convincing body of evidence to the contrary. it's like the old Yogi Berra saw about the popular restaurant: "nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded."Highnumbers wrote: ↑Tue Mar 02, 2021 12:17 pmAs for the necks, I guess some people struggle with the normal neck width ... but you know who didn't struggle with it? That Yogi Berra quote is great, and so true. I'm not saying that some people don't struggle with the normal Rickenbacker necks, but this suddenly became a "thing" online within the last 10-15 years.
Sadly, some of the guys I know that complain about it the most can barely play cowboy chords, it wouldn't matter how wide the neck is... they're often old guys who gave up guitar as a teenager and then re-discovered it after retirement and bought a Rickenbacker, just to complain about everything.

I also feel that's one of those things that gets repeated over and over, til people start believing it and repeating themselves for no reason.Highnumbers wrote: ↑Tue Mar 02, 2021 4:24 pmAh, of course! Same with the one trick pony deal... I have owned Rickenbackers, and they can do whatever music style I choose to play..
Lots of crappy players post demos these days.. Lots of dudes posting some lame intro bits an pieces, along with some random bullshit cowboy chord strumming passing themselves off as some sort of authority in the guitar world.

a guy on our local Town Council used to say, "the problem with having a public forum is that you get the public."

Photoshop? If Rickenbacker actually put these out, you'd likely have a few exploding heads over at RRF.
I love these ideas. The 330 looks great as a Bass.

No they’re real. These are the recently introduced 90th anniversary models.BoringPostcards wrote: ↑Tue Mar 02, 2021 8:37 pmPhotoshop? If Rickenbacker actually put these out, you'd likely have a few exploding heads over at RRF.

The bass is the first time a Rickenbacker has made a semi-hollow bass since the 4005 production ended about 40 years ago. They’re also short scale! I played one and it’s super fun, I think it’s 30” scale (thought I’m a guitarist so it felt more natural than a full bass scale).
The 480 is a modern take on an old discontinued model (the 480), which uses the 4001 bass body shape. So it’s sort of a role reversal, you have the bass with a 330 guitar body and the guitar with a 4001 bass body.

Re: Rickenbacker on backorder
Wow. I am familiar with the 480/481. Seems these have the 650/380L style bridges, rather than the standard Rickenbacker set up, which the 480 had originally. Do these 480 reissues have bolt on?Highnumbers wrote: ↑Tue Mar 02, 2021 9:16 pmNo they’re real. The bass is wowzers. I really can't wait to try one. Hope one ends up in my neck of the woods.
