Thanks for your replies, everyone! Based on what I learned, I'm leaning towards a Yamaha. I like how Yamaha SG shape is clearly inspired by both, Gibson LP and SG, yet has a vibe of its own (unlike most lawsuit era guitars). I read that SG 2000s and 3000s have great pickups, but some models lower in the line really don't. Is that true? Is there a threshold that I should not go beyond? Like models below SG 600 or 500 or something?
I don't know that there is a ton of difference, to be honest. Depends on the era. The 76-80 ones are considered 'the golden years' and nothing I've played from that era has disputed that claim so far, although they rarely make outright crap so I can't imagine you'll find a dog.

I think this clip of the SG500 sounds pretty good, even if I'm not into the choices of music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3IMrx1hbi8

Either way, I'd see if you can snag one pre-81.

P.S: SLs sound like a good option too. Definitely something to consider. Thanks again!
Jonesie knows a guy selling his cherryburst SL500 for $450 with the case, I believe. Might want to PM him about it.

Korean Dearmond M-75, set-neck not bolt on and with the gold tone HBs.

I was an original Hagstrom Swede owner in the late 70s, they were actually great playing but I was never happy with the pickups, they also haven't aged very well - seem to fall apart, don't know much about the more recent asian versions.

. . .and then of course there is Epiphone, if you don't care about resale it seems the path of least resistance.

SG... at least that's what Gibson thought.
