Mexican gear find: 1972 Gibson SG Pro

Post by Pacafeliz » Sun Aug 01, 2021 3:53 am

Well of course I had to bring something back from my trip to Mexico. This time I found this rare beater/hack job of a 1972 SG Pro, a rather infamous short lived version of the SG Special.

Nasty head stock break repair, missing/removed neck pickup, amateur pickguard, changed tuners, Badass bridge, well all in all butchered and modded all over. The Bigsby arm is wobbly/worn out (?), de-tunes terribly.

But you know I love em like that, just my thing!

(pic from yesterday)

Now I've given it a good cleaning, new strings, etc but damn I need to get a matching truss rod adjustment key, since the action is a bit too high for me.

Case is beat to shit on the outside but quite nice inside.

Considering adding a mini humbucker in the neck...?

...neck cavity.
Hmm this might have been glued in there for neck stability? Also breaks on the sides. Well it's an SG ::)

Anyone ID those tuners?

I believe there's actual screws in that "repair" :wtf:

Amateurish extra groves for the 3 highest strings to make the spring space correct for the Badass (Pat.Pend., BTW)

Anyone ID those tuners?

They look a lot like the Gotoh tuners in my mid-eighties MIJ telecaster.

A buddy of mine swears by those 70s SG Pros and SG 1s – he's got a few that are pretty modded, but nothing like this one!

Loads of personality in this one. Any idea what that second toggle was wired to?

It still is... Dunno what it does, though. Guess I'd need a neck pickup to find out.

Those gears are from a Kustom guitar. That headstock probably needs to be re-broken and done properly. If the neck heel break was repaired as well as the headstock.... ouch.
Those horseshoe "Gibsby" trems differ from a standard Bigsby in one IMPORTANT respect. The Gibson used nylon bushings instead of the Bigsby needle roller bearings. Take that trem to a machine shop and have Bigsby bearings installed. The difference in tuning stability will be startling.
