SG Custom then?

They didn't make those in '86
Apparently they did. This was reportedly the 12th one off the line when they first resurrected the SG Custom. Officially, they came out in '87 but this one dates to '86.

Still not quite sure what to make of it, but it has sublimely low action, plenty of honest play wear, and makes me feel a little bit fancy. I'll take some time to get to know it before I render any verdicts on how long it'll be staying with me.

I don't normally like middle pickups and it feels like there's no room underneath the strings, but that may be something I can get used to. It certainly has a vibe about it, that's for sure.

Ah Ha! I was right! What a looker. For an '87!

Congratulations. Beautiful and unique guitar with it being a one off and all. I would feel fancy playing it too. I long for an SG Custom and Les Paul custom to complete my bucket list collection one day

I don’t know… kind of plain, isn’t it, Mike?

I really like those, but I like the ones with that weird looking long rectangular trem even more.

It's got '86 stamped into it and it was my birthday so I'm sticking with that!

Thanks! I feel very lucky to have it come into my possession. It really does feel like "someone else's dream guitar" when I play it. I'll definitely feel guilty if it doesn't grow on me.

I know, right? It's practically a melodymaker. Maybe some stickers might jazz it up?

I didn't know much of anything about these guitars until I googled them after the trade offer - but I like those too! They kind of look like codpieces, but it works with the giant mass of metal that is this guitar's pickups.

Is the middle pickup always on with these ones?

The traditional wiring goes neck, middle and bridge out of phase, and bridge.

Total waste of 3 pickups, in my opinion. Neck and bridge is one of the best tones on any Gibson in my books, and I have no idea why 5 or 7-way switching isn't standard, or even 3 way plus a middle pickup blend.

If it was newer or cheaper, rewiring it would be my first order of business. I'm not sure I want to touch the electronics, these are not cheap guitars and traditionalists would probably hate it if I decide to move it on at some point.

I mean, do you like how it plays? I don't know that you have a PAF Gibson, do you? If you like how it plays, and you probably do, then this is it.

Oh, wait, you have the V.

Yeah, this is certainly very different than the V, so it's going to take some time to really feel out the differences.

But yeah, this one plays like a dream, other than the foreign feeling of a middle pickup under the picking hand.

It's very foreign in a lot of ways at the moment, so I'm just going to work on adjusting to it. I'm sure ill get used to the pickups, and I'm also sure that I have yet to find the amp and pedal tones that help it shine brightest.

But so far, it's a heck of a good time playing it.

It was an in-person trade, so it's in hand already! But yeah, I'm not so sure this one needs sparkles to dress it up. I think it's got enough going on visually! Plus the aged/worn nitro finish is half the fun.

Cool. I have my dad's '74 pretty much just like it, but in black. Amazing looks.

But I hardly ever play it. (too) chunky neck, tiny frets, and the middle pickup does get in the way. I also rewired it so the middle position isn't out to phase (wth were they thinking?!). Neck and treble position sound great, pickups are original tarbacks.

Sure hope you like/play yours more than I do.
I only take it outta its case for about a week each year, then stash it away again. Yeah what a waste, but it IS my dad's guitar he got in the 70s so I won't be "able" to sell it, I guess.
i love delay SO much ...that i procrastinate all the time.
