Here's the 120th anniversary V. There's nothing special about it really, it just has the 120th Anniversary inlay at the twelfth fret. It already started to yellow quite a bit, it looks even more-so in person. I swear the paint was just as white as the pickguard when I replaced the pickups with a white set of Seymour Duncan Black Winters.

Yeah, Gibson's white finishes yellow super quickly. That's why I find it annoying that they often make things in "vintage white" which is pre-yellowed to imitate older finishes. The problem is that it then starts yellowing into a custard colour.

My white V is one of those vintage white ones, it had more contrast with the white guard when brand new than yours does after nearly a decade. I just stuck a black guard on it so I won't notice as much.

Those 120th anniversary models are pretty great, they came at the tail end of Gibson making the '67 style Vs. The limited Japanese run the next year were the last of the large pickguards, though they had 70's specs (thin body, rounded headstock, volute), so the 120th models were the final true '67 style Vs.

The very first guitar ive ever played (Put my hands on rather, as i never learned any chords til much later) was a green Flying V copy. (Green as in the logo from the band Poison)

Said V was missing 2 strings, but that was a crucial moment in my life. I was maybe 12 years old.

I love V's, I wanted to get the Brent Hinds Epiphone V for years until I found out the neck was a massive 50's style one.

But I have this weird thing with all Gibsons where they HAVE to have neck binding, otherwise they just look cheap to me for some reason.

What would be the best bang-for-buck 58 style V out there? I'd almost certainly put P90s in regardless so pickups aren't a factor

I prefer bound necks on Gibsons as well. My white V I posted a couple pages back is the current "70's" model, and it has an amazing bound neck. Unfortunately, they're weirdly expensive both new and on the used market, but you might like that model.

I also owned a 2016 "Flying V Pro T" which I picked up because it was decently priced and had both neck and body binding. For whatever reason, it always felt awful to play despite my best effort at dialing in the setup. Not sure if it was a lemon or if they were all like that.

Epiphone, hands down. I briefly owned one of the Chinese "limited edition" korina (veneer) ones with the black pickguard. The neck and general playability were better than half my actual Gibsons. The pickups were terrible, but that's easily remedied.

The current production model is the same as far as I can tell, just black with a white pickguard. If you want a nice feeling '58 style V, you'd be crazy to look at anything other than Epiphone IMO.

The thing I discovered about '58 Vs is that the neck joint, and consequently the strap button, are about 1.5 frets closer to the bridge vs the '67 style. Coupled with the light weight of the body, that made for a bit of neck dive, which is something I've never experienced on any other V.

I don't know if mine was unusually light, or if they're all like that, but it really wanted to sit kinda horizontally on the strap, so I felt like I was always struggling to readjust it to a comfortable angle.

I loved playing that guitar while sitting down - it was a joy to play. But man did it annoy me when standing, so I reluctantly let it go. So my advice would be to bring a strap when you try one out, and see if it works for you. '67 style Vs balance perfectly at whatever angle you want them on the strap. They're probably the best-balanced guitars I've ever played standing, even though they're light, which is one of the reasons I love them so much. It was a bummer to discover the '58 wasn't the same in that way.
