Also don’t know how I missed it, but dang, that’s a dreamy guitar! How are the saddles on it? I’ve had varied experiences with 50s saddle screws. I must say I felt quite proud to see a pointy guitar amongst the ranks ago such greatness. And to notice the independent on/off switches for each pickups just made it that much more official Haha :D

Heheh...that old Hohner is definitely among some friends with stories! :D

Hopefully I will get it up and running properly in the new year...I had a new Kahler vibrato installed on it, but it is not agreeing with the guitar very much, so I think I I'll have someone pull it out, fill the cavity and put a Strat-style hardtail bridge on...that's for another thread though!

The saddles the Esquire came with were not original, they were compensated brass, the screws were fairly high, so I swapped them with short screws and some different brass compensated saddles that have a lower profile. Feels great now. 8)

What a beautiful guitar. Speaking of Kahlers.... Id throw a Kahler and a super distortion on the neck. :w00t:

Ah yeah! My first serious guitar was my brother’s 1986 MIJ Charvel Jackson Model 6. SSH set up with three independent switches. My brother use to play it in the church youth group and I laughed every time. Something about strumming open chords on a Sunday, and it not being, “ More than Words “, or, “ Every Rose “ just felt off to me. :D As much as a pain in the butt that Kahler was to set up, did ever stay in tune!

Dude, my experience exactly! I had a mutt of a ‘69 neck on a ‘50s body and the same thing. After market ‘70s saddles and just high enough saddle screws to catch the skin of the palm. Glad to hear you got it sorted.

Hehehe...the pointy guitars definitely have "that vibe"...the switches on mine are on/off for the two single coils and then it is three-way coil split/off/full humbucker. They sound surprisingly decent, although I'd love to get something nicer up there.

The 24 fret neck is nice and flat, the edges nicely rolled from the years and years of playing...the one downside is that it is a bit heavy, but if I get the Kahler off it it will help lots. 8)

Might make a thread about it all in the new year.

I can’t play well enough to justify the real deal
I think the "plays well enough to justify it" ship has sailed for almost everyone. Even the best players in the world are unlikely to justify purchasing the priciest vintage guitars now (and I suspect a good many professional players couldn't really afford them anyway).

I feel like those players who do use them as working tools (maybe this includes me?) mostly got them a long time ago. Fortunately, plenty of brand-new and used guitars are around that are very, very cool and more than good enough to make amazing music.

1930-1970 guitars are still my favorite guitars on earth, but I suspect we can let go of any playing-ability litmus test for ownership... anyone who will enjoy them and take good care of them is a worthy owner IMO

Hear, hear!
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.
