Joan Jett is so cool...I remember DJing at a club a couple of years ago and suddenly dropping "I Hate Myself For Loving You"

the place went crazy!  8)

I like everything but the headstock.

What's the problem? It's a standard (by that I mean thin) Gibson headstock used on the vintage Melody Makers.

Just personal taste really. I'd prefer a chunkier headstock, give the guitar more visual balance.

I think Joan Jett kicks ass.  I have a secret crush on her, too.

However, the idea of a Joan Jett signature melody maker is just another Gibson marketing scheme up there in the ranks of the billy joe armstrong les paul and the tom delonge whatever and the list goes on and on.

It's astonishing to me the number of guitars gibson is cranking out that are just variations on a theme...

It's astonishing to me the number of guitars Fender is cranking out that are just variations on a theme...  ;)

I think both major companies have turned the page and are so far removed from actually being INNOVATORS that they should rebrand themselves as lifestyle companies, not musical instrument companies.

Case in point - the new Gibson homepage offers two option:

I KNEW that one was coming...  ::)

I can't dispute Fender is guilty as well.  I'm sure we could both come up with countless examples from both companies.  I just kind of rolled my eyes when I saw that another signature artist guitar rolled off the gibson floor.  Fender earned a couple of points back from me (as if it matters) with the classic series bringing jags and JMs into the fold.  But yes, they're both guilty.

I think it's a tough call as far as innovation goes.  At the end of the day, you can only do so much with some wood, six strings, and a few thousand coils of wire.  Essentially, every six stringed guitar produced after the very first one is just a variation on a theme.  But, I'd rather see a varation on a theme stand on it's own then have an artists name slapped on the back or front of the headstock in order to move a few more guitars through the guitar shop checkout line.  This is a generalization, of course.  The Les Paul stands on it's own and is the definitive "artist" series guitar.  The Gretsch Chet Atkins has a lot of history.  My argument is general in nature and can be easily picked at.  I guess I find the idea of a Joan Jet signature melody maker a bit on the pointless side.  But, I suppose that's why I play guitars instead of running a guitar company.  I'm sure to someone it made business sense.  Is there a run-of-the-mill re-issue Melody Maker?  How much of a price jack does the JJ signature command over that?  I don't know....

Yes, there are two reissues but neither are double-cuts.

The single-cuts cost $384 at Musician's Friend (which is pretty cheap considering it's a US-made guitar!!). The single-cut also has a wrap-around bridge, not a two-piece tune-o-matic.
