You just need to get a couple Les Paul Jrs to put those bad ass p90s into 8)

I did wonder why the grommet that the leads go into wasn't black, when you posted the photo, but then I thought maybe some were different colour and somehow I never noticed. Bummer for sure. :(
Yeah, I saw a bunch online that had a black one, and a few without a grommet at all. Didn't even notice the wire colour. Oh well.

You could always pretend you're not sure what it is but that it was pulled from a 1956 LP Custom ...
I wish I was ruthless enough to be this disingenuous but I'm not that kinda person. I don't like to pass on bad luck.

I mean, you’re still way in the positive on this thing. By the time you sell this pup, even if you take a big hit on it, you’ll only be set back a few hundred at most.
Yeah, in the bigger picture for sure it's not really an issue but it doesn't stop the sting initially. It's all fine though, I've put the 68 one back in for now and relisting the other one as it is a great sounding pickup (better than the replacement to my ears).

Hah! I'm not saying the idea of getting another guitar to put the original 68 one in hadn't crossed my mind...

Maybe you can part-exchange the one you have for a 50s one in the future...it is still a valuable part, but yeah I 100% understand the disappointment. :(

Indeed. I've popped it up on Reverb for what seems like a sensible price (hard to tell as vintage Gibson parts are all over the place with prices AND my knowledge base is 90% Fender). I can stomach a few £ hit on it and chalk it up to the learning curve.

C'est la vie

Looks like the self-imposed budget is going to get 'Grand Designs'd a little. Still, no rush and not the biggest hurdle to overcome.

I put the pickup on Reverb this morning and it already sold. The revenue from that against the original cost leaves me at a £164 deficit. Not the worst outcome but still annoying.

And I still need to find a proper one.

Nah seriously. I mean, you won't be selling it as 100% original anyway. I'd put that old pickup in there, repair the serial and call it a day.
You're an honest guy and won't be sellig it as 100% stock, so another, slightly less old pickup won't make a BIG difference in the price i think.

You're probably right. The difference in value will be more than a pickup would set me back so it would be beneficial (financially) to find a correct one but, at the moment, I'm in no mind to sell so it's irrelevant.

I used to own this exact vintage black beauty. Had the original case for it too. I’d get giddy like a little kid every time I’d near the case and open it. Had that old case smell, old guitar smell, and just felt like a million bucks in your hands. Hope yours hits you the same.

I was asked a bunch of times on YouTube and Instagram etc to demonstrate how it sounds

Here's a weird schizophrenic mixture of part-songs and improv through a phone camera

Articulate is the exact adjective I'd use too. Even with a lot of gain or distortion it's still crisp and the notes still ring.

Shame it's so heavy and so valuable. I'd love to gig it

I like how the gain bridge pickup riff is Thin Lizzy. I do the same exact thing with my LP.
