Keeping an eye out for more recent Deluxes would be an option too. It's an easy pickup swap. The run from the 2004/5 aren't priced terribly and are good guitars. I've got a black one like this. They did wine red and gold tops. The neck profile is a little bit beefier than a slim taper, but is by no means big.
Tom, what are the frets like on those later Deluxe models? Are they the modern Gibson fret wire or possibly the low and flat 70's style the original ones have?
There're a modern medium jumbo. They're unremarkable in both dimensions. I don't know how long the low wide 70s wire persisted into the 80s, but my guess is not too long.

I'll be back up probably around the 3rd week of April and you're welcome to come over and have a look and borrow if you'd like.

That's a very nice offer, and St. Louis will be very nice by the third week of April. I love spring here. Never get tired of it.

Not sure about the frets, I played a Deluxe that was made in 1982 and was blown away by the frets and how easy the guitar was to play because of them. That's what got my whole Norlin fascination going, but they didn't use those frets on all the guitars. And I haven't been able to afford a Norlin era Custom, but if I had the money, that is absolutely what I would be buying.

Yeah, it's absolutely gorgeous.

I'd guess they lasted about as long as volutes did, so '83 or so. I'm driving because I want my road bicycle in STL for the summer, but I'm thinking of swapping a couple FL guitars with STL guitars for a change and my '76 Custom is coming back up with as it needs a little work anyway. I like Norlin stuff too. I debated between a Pro Deluxe and an R6 in 2003 but got the gold top instead. The Specials from that era, both the early wraparounds and later stoptails, haven't gotten as expensive as the Customs or Deluxes and do have the wide frets.

I love this look on an LP but for some reason the white ones are usually massively more expensive... Is it simply the 'Randy Rhodes' tax in effect or something else I'm missing?
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?

That one is kind of "reasonable", they're asking $3500, which is on the lower end of the 70's and 80's Customs. I mean, it might as well be a billion for all I can buy it, but anyway.

One day, though.

That's definitely the lowest I've heard of recently.

I too am in no position to buy new guitars right now either though.

A Gold Top, P90 equipped Gibson LP has been on my list for years. But the cost of entry has always been so...high.
$2,500-$3,000 just seems so overpriced for the LP. Granted it's got a legacy that's impressive for the LP, but damn, Gibson must have sunk some gold in the cavities of these guitars because from a versatility standpoint an LP doesn't really do too many pony tricks. But the tricks it DOES do are quite good. If I get the opportunity I may end up with a GT90 :D

One of the guitars I sometimes regret selling was a Gibson Custom '57 Goldtop with the dark back. I've played a number of the Custom reissues, but this one actually felt good to play (many were pretty uninspiring, even though they had nice 'Burst tops). I bought it when the prices were still reasonable, and sold it for a profit. As another poster wrote, it didn't have many tricks (I tended to fall into British Blues with mine), but it did them very well.

I love single-pickup guitars and gold guitars so the Epiphone JJN Gold Glory really caught my eye!

I'd change the TR cover, though.

I decided to include a pic of my black and gold "lowly" Epiphone cuz I think it is kind of pretty. Epiphone that it is.

Imgur has changed its pic hosting options. DK if this will work.
