I'm sure there are reasons for manufacturers to use the terms, but I'm always disproportionately annoyed at seeing guitars referred to as "S-style" or "T-style" instead of simply "strat" or "tele." It makes sense that brand ___ doesn't want to get sued for trademark infringement in their ad copy, but that doesn't mean other people need to perpetuate the euphemisms.
It just strikes me as the linguistic equivalent of the aesthetically awkward, "just different enough from Fender to get by Legal" headstock shapes.
