Any kind soul care to edify me on coil tapping?

For guitars of the straight waisted variety (or reverse offset).

Any kind soul care to edify me on coil tapping?

Post by Loomer » Sat Jun 28, 2008 8:55 pm

I have a Strat ( ) that I'm planning on dropping a HB into. At the bridge. It's a Lace Sensor Red Dually. There are 3 wires coming from each coil. I already have a push/pull pot.

Would anyone be so kind as to draw or link me to a diagram or instructions on how to install this? I would be extremely grateful.  :)

First thing you need to know is that "tapping" a coil and splitting a humbucker are two different things.

Even pickup makers these days use the terms interchangably, but tapping is actually shorting out part of a coil so as to reduce output. It's usually done with single coils, but sometimes people tap one or both coils of a humbucker.

Splitting a humbucker is shorting out one whole coil so the pickup approximates (very badly, in my opinion) a single coil.
