Offset Tele

Post by flatfiver » Wed Jul 23, 2008 8:57 pm

So I'm expecting either a :? or :k response with little or no middle ground, but I'm thinking of buying one of these used for a very good price:

Image

Yamaha PAC-1511MS Mike Stern model.  It's made in Japan and is really well put together.  I'd probably change out the pickups at some point but even with humbuckers it's still got a lot of Tele spank, thank you ash body and 1-piece maple neck.

The only thing that's putting me off is the neck.  The fretboard edges make a pretty abrupt turn towards the back of the neck, which gives it a kind of rounded over pointy edge.  I'll see how that goes once I spend a little more time with it though.

Thoughts?  Anyone with any prior experience?

I agree with that. I think it has a certain charm though.

Although not the most pleasant looker, these guitars are actually nice players....
But the term "off-set" might be a bit far fetched imo. But appart from that, the Yamaha Pacifica a good bang for buck imo....

i think the headstock could be re-shaped to look more tele-esque... and lose the decals for something orignal ;)

I have a PAC311MS going on Ebay in a day or so.
The board is very flat, very fast.
I agree on the edges...they are not "subtle", but make for a guitar a shredder would love.

I really liked...but I never played it, so I would rather it be owned by someone who will use it.
Competition Stripes make them play FASTER.

The board on this guy actually has a 7-1/4" radius - I think most other Yamahas are 12" or 13" or something like that.

I'm glad you guys like it so much! ;D

Didn't Chandler had something resembling an offset tele at one point?

Can't find it one the web...it's a nineties model with lipstick PUs. This Chandler baritone comes very close to what I remember:

Ah, here it is, the Chandler Austin Special (which someone, Blueavenger I think, mentioned in another thread. Funny how this work.)

Hmm, maybe not so Tele after all. Ah well.
