B.C. Rich thrash find and floyd rose question.

Post by fuzzking » Fri Jul 25, 2008 3:54 am

my friend found this a few days ago:

he wants to restore it, and the only problem is the trem:

i have no knowledge whatsoever about these things - a quick search on the internetz gave me no results and i couldn't find this particular model.

do these "licensed by" things all have the same measurements? could i just get him a "lic.by FR" on the bay and it would drop in?

The photo isn't that good but that doesn't look like a normal Floyd to me.  If it were however, some of the measurements can differ.  I believe the Schaller manufactured licensed Floyd's were a bit smaller.  I could be mistaken though, I'm not up on my shred guitar details these days.

I think it's an older Floyd Rose II, and a licensed one at that - pretty low end.  The guitar looks like a Korea-made "NJ Series" one, which would jibe with the bridge quality...

I would hit it with WD 40 and a toothbrush, then reassemble...don't throw too much money into it, not a hugely valuable guitar, and that's coming from a pointy guitar fan!

I think it might be a Floyd Rose in name only. It seems to be much closer to a 2-point strat bridge. Notice that the strings don't go in backwards like most FR's.

What's the trouble with it? Besides the obvious (connection to Floyd Rose)...  :P

you could take mesurements, then go to a nearby guitar store. If they don't have anything, you could ask whatever ebay guy to measure his.

thanks for the replies!

the lower half of the trem (looks like die-cast aluminium) has broken off.
i know it's not a very valuable guitar, but i thought i might be worth finding a cheap replacement - see how happy the guy is with that thing. havent't even though of schaller, i see if i can find any specs on their site first.

Yeah, that's not a Floyd at all.  For some reason that photo wasn't loading (just the one with the guy) when I first posted.  I'm not sure what that is but it's certainly of the beginner guitar variety.  I suppose your chances of finding one of those on eBay are actually not that bad given that it's not a highly desirable part.

Ahhh - now I see - the base plate done broke off!  Ok, that makes more sense now - it just didn't look right, even for a cheap one!

Here's a great site for Floyd fix tips: http://audiozone.dk/index-filer/floyd-tremolo-tips.htm

If you just want to say "forget it - I want to just buy a used one on ebay", I'd say go the Jackson route.  Here's a list of the ones available and the pros/cons/measurements - http://audiozone.dk/index-filer/TremoloInfoProject.htm

I'd say the JT-500 is a direct drop in (US$40-ish), the JT-590 is the same size, but better quality and more expensive (US$70-ish).

Original Floyd Rose and Schallers run about $150, even used, so don't go there, also, the spacing would be too wide for an imported guitar.

Hope that helps!

Hellz yeah! I actually really dig Ironbirds - Max Cavalera used to play one, and I thought he was the coolest during my formative "metal years".

That piece of crap is an actual Floyd, or at least Floyd made a model just like it. They all totally sucked, totally didn't work, and everyone I've ever seen for sale has been totally broken in the same place, same way.

Get the center-to-center on the bridge posts - there has to be something that will line up.
