what's that on Paul Kantner's pickguard (Rickenbacker). Is that one of those 3D postcard type things? It's not a hologram, I don't think they had holograms in the 1960s.

I think it's the same material as they used on the "Rickenbacker LightShow" (a rickenbacker, with a built in disco-lighting system: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMse1Ob9-CE ) guitars. Sadly enough, it isn't available anymore.
