Yoohoo! I finally got a Gretsch hockey stick gtr!!

Post by mjet » Thu Feb 01, 2007 4:20 am

I've been pining for one of these for a few years now. They usually go for $500 or so, but I caught this one thanks to an eBay email "favorite search" notice - $250 buy-it-now. Yowzaa! It's got some wear which doesn't bother me a bit and might need a fret job but I have a local luthier who does top work for cheeeeep.

So without any further ado, Ladies and Gentlemen (and those Offsetters who don't belong to either category), I present to you MY 1978 Gretsch TK-300:

Love that headstock!

I saw one a couple years ago and it just spoke to me, like an overly-ugly puppy that you just can't leave. Ah, those 70s...

Here are some clearer photos of a collector-grade model from Japan (it's hard to think of "1978" and "collector grade" in the same sentence, but I suppose it'll be upon us soon enough! I think they made them in transparent red and natural only but I need to do some googling to confirm if that's true.

Yeah, I kind of like it. I could see myself playing one of those.

The bridge/tailpiece on the natural one looks suspiciously like a Badass. Hard to tell if the red one has the same bridge. It might be a Badass style copy that is standard on the guitars - if the natural one is supposed to be "collector grade" then presumably the bridge is original.

I had a '78 Guild bass that was similar to those. I found it in a pawn shop for $75. It was a strange-looking thing but kinda cool and fun to play. It was very light (especially compared to the same era p-bass!)...

The bass player in one of my old bands played a natural hockey stick Gretsch that sounded cool.  Not better then then the Rick 4001 v64 he eventually switched too though.

It appears that Gretsch started using a "Terminator" bridge/tailpiece combo which was almost identical to the Badass (maybe before it was a separate part?). So I think it's probably original or if it was swapped, it's very close to original. Here's a stock photo of another guitar with the same bridge.

There's no shame in losing out to a Ricky! I had a cream-colored 4001 when I was a wee teenager which I think I sold for $400 or something insane like that. Of course I think I bought it for $350 - those were the days...

It totally looks like something Eastwood would reissue. Never seen one before. How do they sound? What do they sound like?
