The perfect electric guitar combination

Post by d-rock » Mon Oct 26, 2009 4:27 am

After buying and selling about 25 guitars for the better part of 15 years I think I've finally settled into my electric collection. Or maybe I should say -- combination. These three electrics are perfect for me and compliment each other wonderfully.

'96 Tex-Mex Tele Special w/ 50's Esquire white blonde body :: incredible rock machine, very versatile with the neck HB and 5-way switch. Can be sweet and chimey or fat and full of sustain.

'97 Guild Starfire :: fully hollow HB guitar :: Probably the sweetest sounding hollowbody I've tried or owned.

'08 Classic Player Jazzmaster w/ gold anodized guard :: fits the tones in-between the Tele and the Guild. It's got that quasi-hollow tone that only a JM can supply.

This recently replaced my CIJ Burst Parts JM. I had a great time accumulating the parts but in the end, the sum wasn’t as great as all the pieces. Weird I know, I just didn’t have “it". I really like this CP JM, it feels great, sounds great and looks cool. I was really looking for a CP JM in sunburst, but had a cap on my spending. all the 'bursts I found were going for a good bit more. I think the gold really sets off the black.

What do you think is the perfect electric guitar combination?

4 is the magic number I reckon.
1 Jazzy
1 Tele
1 Hollowbody (dot, viking, Guild etc)
1 SG (or student model Gibson)

Thanks Paul. The previous body was almost a banana yellow color :-X When I found this white blonde body I knew I had a winning combination. Plus the ash grain is tasty.

1) Tele or similar single coiled solid body
2) P90 equipped solid body
3) Humbucker equipped semi-hollow or a Ric of any sort
4) Something completely different and semi hollow, like a Dearmond equipped guild or a Mosrite celeb.
Pan and mix.

That would be an awesome collection, but I'd trade the hollowbody for a strat. I can get those hollowbody sounds from a jazzy in the middle position. And I would add a 5th so I could have both a P-90 and a humbucker :-[
May God bless the Banjo Players... They try so hard...

I get away with my three electrics.

1. Modified Telecaster. GFS Dream 90 in the neck, Texas Special in the Bridge, with a Bigsby.
2. Modded SG. GFS Mini-humbucker in the neck, Bill Lawrence 1970's Mini-Humbucker in the bridge, with a Bigsby
3. 12 String Telecaster with GFS Lipstick pickups in neck and bridge.

Perfect combo really.

Jazzmaster is a must. A tele can be rigged up to cover the strat sound as well as it's own. I'd personally go full archtop with a floating pickup but really the hollow body sound is indispensable. All you need after that is either a good humbucking guitar or maybe something with p-90's if that's your preference.
