hi all

i fancy an Epi LP, any better copies out there in the same price range

i wont get a chance to try a few in a shop for a while
i want it as a full-on "rawk" guitar, so although I hear p90s are great
I am worrying that they wont have enough "rawk"
are they like single-coils?

Also I believe that the epi pups need changin anyway

i have a JM-90 from curtis and its great for lead
but I'm not mad into the cleans or crunchys off it
but i dont know how this relates to Epi p90's
what the deal with "burstbuckers"?

any advice/thoughts welcome

You'll definitely want to change the pups, at least if you get one of the cheaper models. They sound alright clean, if you want a dark bluesy tune that is, but strangely enough they sound like absolute shit distorted, all mud and no definition or dimension. The complete opposite of singe coils. Haven't tried an Epi with P-90's yet but they seem ok.

I have the Special II("special" as in "retarded"). Very heavy and ugly, goes out of tune after 15-30 minutes of heavy-handed playing. Avoid at all costs.

In a sudden fit of patriotism i'd like to suggest the Hagström Swede, it's in the price range of the more expensive Epis and at least in my opinion better than most of them.

The best reason I can think of for getting an Epiphone LP over a Greco lawsuit LP is the words "Les Paul" on the headstock.  Mind you, I love most every Epiphone I've ever played, and if you change out the pickups, you're gonna have yerself a fine rawk-machine.  But if I was ever gonna buy another LP, it would either be a Gibby or a second Greco.  Oh, and P-90s can definitely bring the rawk.  That's the only thing J. Mascis uses in the studio if I'm not mistaken.

I'm not too familiar with the copies or with Epis but yeah, P-90s can bring it. I think they are a bit more versatile on a guitar with a maple cap.

I've played a couple of recent burstbucker equipped LP standards locally and I liked them. The ones I played seemed to fall somewhere inbetween mini-humbuckers and more typical humbucker sounds. They were definitely less muddy and more responsive than the stock pickups in my '76 Custom.

Check out the epi '56 RI gold top w/ P90s - second guitar I ever bought. I plugged it into my cranked blues deluxe the other week and that thing seriously roared!

Current MIJ Edwards copies should be pretty good. Find on Ishibashi.
