Should I buy a '67 SG special for $1600?
pretty beat up, but no cracks or breaks, all original except for the tuning heads. I was looking for a Guild S-100 or maybe a '61 reissue SG, really what I want is a ROCK guitar but damn, 1600 for a 67 sg special is a pretty good deal... maybe i will just start a psychedelic pop band instead of the metal band I was going to...

I'd do it. That sounds pretty darn good to me!
Especially if you can replace the tuners with the correct ones without leaving any gaps/holes... but that's just me. Maybe it wouldn't bother you.

FWIW I'd go for the '67 SG Special over a '61 SG reissue or a Guild S-100 at that price

As to using it for metal, perhaps Tony Iommi can answer that best. IIRC his is a '65 SG Special, although it's been much battered and modified over the years

Re: Should I buy a '67 SG special for $1600?
pete himself called it power pop! and tony iommi's was modified for humbuckers, right?
i went and checked it out - the "no cracks or breaks" was not particularly accurate - the top has a repair at the input jack, and both sides of the headstock seem to have some issues with the seams, possibly due to the installation of the aftermarket tuners, where the headstock meets the neck is fine but i definitely wouldn't say "no cracks." however the neck does feel quite nice, and those old p90s do sound sweet. Didn't buy it today, checking out a 73 S-100 tomorrow.

Pete has called it many things over the yearsmonark wrote: pete himself called it power pop! and tony iommi's was modified for humbuckers, right?

Yes, Tony's was modified with two humbuckers. There are photos of him, however, using one with P90s. The Mojo issue of a decade or more ago about the 100 best guitarists featured a photo of him playing an SG Special with P90s.

Well I"m sorry to disappoint you guys but I went with the '73 S-100 - the neck on this guitar is so nice....slim and flat, perfect width, feels so goooood..
the SG special is a guitar i would love to own someday but not really what I was looking for at the moment, although I probably should have bought it anyway... another thing about it though is I am sure I would be the person to finally break the headstock on it after 40 years... here is the link to the ebay auction the guy had running:
