Tele-Strat Hybrid...I have a Dream!

Post by fuzzjunkie » Fri Nov 03, 2006 12:18 pm

I love the bridge pickup on a Tele...hate the one on the $trat...but I like the idea of 3 pickups...but I want to have a neck-bridge combo...don't love the Tele headstock, but a $trat headstock is okay if a JM's not around...I like the $trat body shape a bit more than the Tele too, but I like the Tele's blue collar feel...and I like the simple selector-volume-tone control layout and hate the $trat because I'm always knocking them around when I don't want to be. SOoooo...put them all together and all the bad things are cancelled out by the good things!  Put a P-Bass inspired pickguard on it and call it good;D

What do ya'll think? should the neck and middle pups be P-90s or $trat?

As much as I don't like Strat pickups sound-wise, I'm gonna say go with them.  P90s would just look kind of funky.  Black ones...  maybe not too bad, I don't know, but I think that Strat pickups would be the way to go with that design.

I think just 1 p90 would be perfect, are you using a squier '51 as a base for this project, I love mine.

i looked at the '51 because it was in the ballpark of what I want, but I don't know if the Tele bridge plate would cover the bridge and humbucker route on the '51...and I'd need to make a bigger route where the control plate is and change the neck and in the end the pickguard would probably have to be replaced because of the new pickups. I've heard that they're a great buy for the money though.

That looks awesome, nicer than any other tele/strat hybrids I've seen so far I think. Start pickups would look nicer, but if you want a P90 sound you could go with a strat pickup with a more P-90 sort of construction, I'm sure someone makes them.
Times change.  Remember when dog Jimmy used to go white and chalky?  Now it grows hair!  We got used to it. We'll get used to poly. -blueavenger

yeah, all the 3 pickup P90 guitars like the PRS and Reverend models never look quite right. I do like a Tele bridge with a P90, but it should be a one and one deal. I think Curtis Novak makes a black $trat pickup that would balance with the Tele bridge.

Reminds me of the Fender Japan ST75H.

Woah, that looks nice, like an improved '51(which is hard to improve on) If only it had a maple neck..........

Robin makes a guitar like that.  Kind of reminiscent of the Kramer Elliot Easton model (but w/o the Floyd).  Has the whole 51 Pbass/Strat/Tele thing going.  Usually has a Tele bridge, Strat middle and a humbucker (although I've seen P90s) in the neck with the '51P style guard.  Looks pretty cool, plays and sounds even better.  Robin's workmanship is top notch.  I forget the model name-Medley maybe?

$2000 and up seems a bit much, but then I've always thought Robins were overpriced.

I prefer my '51 to that, that just looks repulsive, I would love a '51 with a jag trem though

I agree about that seeming like a high price, but that's LIST.  They usually sell for closer to 1/2 that - between $1,200-$1,300, usually.

Still plenty of other guitars I'd buy for the money, although they are nicely made.

$1200 gets you a really tricked out Ranger.  For the workmanship, I'd say they're worth the bux.
