Decent pics of maple necks w/ wear?
Good day everyone!
I'm looking for real good pics of maple necks with fret and back wear (no relics please)...
The one I made for the nomaster got a bit messed up and I want to order one, but need
to point the maker into the right direction...
Thanks in advance!

Well this is a slightly famous one.

(It's a huge pic) That's the original, front view
http://www.modernguitars.com/imagefiles ... llback.gif
That's the replica, but it's a faithful one. Notice it doesn't have that sanded-off looking wear, and judging from the front of the neck, if any neck would, it would be this one.

Hehe
thanks!

I hate that sanded off look which doesn't show any smooth transitions, it's so unrealistic...

Yeah. And when it's reproduced, it looks even worse:
http://elderly.com/images/fmic/30N/FCRG_neck-back.jpg
That's from Rory Gallagher's strat. Now, I know Rory's was worn on the back like that, but that just looks awful. That's what you get w hen you try to reproduce the look and feel of bare wood clogged with hand oils and grime burnished with steel wool and cotton, with black shoe polish and sanding sealer.
All in all, though, I think the Rory Gallagher is the worst relic Fender's done. It looks so ridiculously "Clean dirty". Here it is next to the original:

I couldn't get a pic of the original's neck back, but I've seen it somewhere. It looks infinitely more natural.
One of Fender's best, on the other hand, has to be Andy Summers' Tele:

FWIW, that's the way a nitro finish wears if it doesn't have a primer coat.FUZZ_KING wrote:

I agree with you there. it flakes off, just like Summers' tele above, but it's a RARE occurrence that a relic job's flaking looks realistic. Also, if I had a guitar where the finish started to wear through, I would most likely steel wool, polish, and buff it to smooth the flakes.

Yeah, the only way to really have it look realistic IMO is to just let it happen naturally...normally wear like that is a result of gouging with a belt buckle, etc...that also leaves an indentation in the wood that isn't present in the 'relics'.Ryan wrote: I agree with you there. it flakes off, just like Summers' tele above, but it's a RARE occurrence that a relic job's flaking looks realistic. Here's my favorite example of some of the most horrible and unrealistic neck relicing I've ever seen (taken from the Nashguitars site):

He's apparently proud of it since it's posted as an example of his "work". Personally, I'd be ashamed

Neck relicing and creating convincing weatherchecking seem to be the two most difficult finish effects to master.

Re: Decent pics of maple necks w/ wear?
Normally I'm not a big fan of the most relics I see, but I'll have to order a relic'd one to go with the body for the 57/58 Nomaster project.
I took the idea over from Fullerplast, who abandoned it. The project's been on hiatus since I ordered a slightly relic'd body and now I need a neck to go with it.
The pic of the blacky fretboard will definitely help me specify to the relicer what I want and what I not want. If you got more good / bad examples in good
resolution, please keep 'em coming. I appreciate!

Cheers!

Yeah nash's timewarp seems to be hit or miss. Bad:

Good:

He seems to overdo it on all the guitars. I don't know about you, but I've had this one guitar for over 15 years, and I never really clean it or anything, but it doesn't have one tenth the grime on those guitars. I don't know what people are after. Relics I see most often don't look like I played them for 30 years, more like some insane, acid-sweating leprechaun used them as a surfboard.
