I've always liked the look of these (the guitar versions) though didn't realize they were a Maton, but honestly, I think the shape works WAY better as a bass. That thing is seriously coolantisymmetric wrote:^Fenton Weill, correct? I like it.
My Maton Big Ben- had it forever, still not sure- some days it looks cool, others...

I've seen a lot of Wandres, mainly thanks to Harvester, and they really are all that little but more batshit crazy looking than anything else out there.frelonvert wrote:Wandre Davoli "Scarabeo" !
This one's definitely on the ugly side bit it's still so fucking cool.

in the mid 90's i was touring through florida ... went to some music store, forget where exactly ... there were four or five wandres on the wall, all around $500 a pop if memory serves. those were the last-of-The-Days: we'd go out w/ a basically empty van and coming home we'd b flush w/ gear and records and clothes.

Great story! this was a time when guitars were cheap and vintage guitar even cheaper^^rocket_no9 wrote:in the mid 90's i was touring through florida ... went to some music store, forget where exactly ... there were four or five wandres on the wall, all around $500 a pop if memory serves. those were the last-of-The-Days: we'd go out w/ a basically empty van and coming home we'd b flush w/ gear and records and clothes.
I also get lucky in Florida... mid 90's, like you, I went to USA on an exchange student trip.... I was 16.
I ask my pal to take me at a guitar shop. It was in Pensacola, a very small shop with pianos and some guitars... in a dark corner were was two old gibsons, an SG and a LP.
I grab the LP for 120$ with its old case. Came back to France. The guitar was almost unplayable with no sound plugged. So I went to the LAG factory, near my home, and asked for something to be done. I wanted them to put dimarzo's pickup (something I have red about Slash on a magazine). I meet a nice guy there, he told me to keep the original pickups, refretted it and changed the rotten pots. He told me also that it was a LP custom black beauty and gave me a "custom" logo for the headstock (that was missing)... I had no idea of what I have bought^^

Came very close to buying one with a Floyd, neck through and all. Lucky I didn't, something better came along the next day.Mechanical Birds wrote:
I actually am intrigued by the switching options that tend to be on Mockingbirds, in the same way that I find Jaguar switching appealing... Not bothered by the shape much either, then again I have a heart-shaped guitar at the moment as well.

Could be picks were sharper back then... (What? Am I late?)MKR wrote:those are perfect for this thread. I mean they're cool looking because they're vintage gibsons and all that, but fuck are they ever ugly.Danley wrote:RuffiansFC wrote:
Rely upon a few of these Gibsons to provide that, though:
The extra pickguard material really doesn't help in the visual dept.

Re: Beautiful and Ugly guitars.
BC Rich Mockingbirds are cool. I think they are pretty ugly but Joe Perry made them cool. I almost bought one in a store about 10 years ago. It was probably the best playing guitar I've ever used. It felt incredible. It was a Korean one, the build quality was insane as well.
