I don't really know for sure, but the cutaways don't actually reduce the amount of wood that much compared to a les paul style guitar due to the way they are shaped.

Additionally, I get the feeling that Yamaha were intentionally selecting the heaviest pieces of wood they could find for the SG1000 and 2000 guitars, due to the popular belief back then that more weight = more sustain.
Doesn't it though?! How else are we going to get that "smooth" tone!?

I see some of them on Ebay around 9-9.5 pounds, so it seems like it's just being careful. I feel like my back is a bit more tolerant than it was back when I had my Ibanez AR50 which seemed to weigh two tons. :wtf:

I'm not convinced that the weight plays a major part in it, I've played countless gibson historics and even some vintage gibson les pauls which weren't as heavy as you might expect and still had that sustain that les pauls are famous for. and yet lots of those really heavy pancake bodied les pauls don't sustain like the older ones did.

I think it's more important to make the "load bearing" portion of the guitar (between the points at which the strings are anchored) as solid as possible, regardless of how you go about connecting the neck to the body.

You guys are a terrible influence, you know that right? :P

Now on it's way, one well-worn SG50, one of the lighter slab-bodied predecessors to the more well known SG models from sometime '73 or '74:

Oh nice! Seen that one on ebay for awhile. Let us know how it is! I'm also pretty sure I've seen a video of Richard Jobson rocking one of those when he occasionally picked up a guitar in the Skids.

Nice SG50! They're sort of bringing that one back but with a slightly different body. The top horn is longer. They're calling it the RS line I believe, coming out in 2016. I really like the way they look. I recently played a bunch of the prototypes... we'll see.

eggwheat wrote:My only tip is always get one between 1976-and 81...those 5 years the quality was very high. The bodies got thinner in the early 80's but I have had couple of good one's circa 1984-5...the last ones they made were rubbish in comparison.
Just to clarify, you're saying 1976-1981(inclusive) are the best years, right? I'm a little confused because that's six years, not five. Thanks for your insight!

Reasonably heavy, don't own scales so can't weigh it... But I base heavy on a plexiglass Strat I used to own...

I gotta say that I'm really digging the SG-50 and SG-70 models.

I never knew they done budget versions of the SG series, but I just stumbled upon the SG30 and it looks bloody great! The pickguard is right up my alley.

This. I'm not a huge fan of the 2000s and 1000s but that sg50 is on point. Love it.

So do I 8) Even with the poorly replaced/slightly broken nut and well worn frets it basically plays itself, and weighs fuck all. I used it for all of Thursday's rehearsal.

I'll post a thread with some detailed pictures once I get round to fitting and cutting a new nut, as there seems to be almost no information about SG-50s anywhere.
