Earliest Blocks and Binding JM neck?
Hi all,
What is the earliest Bloacks and Binding Jazzmaster neck that you guys have seen?
Apparently, my 66 JM (which I haven't quite received yet) has a B&B neck with a Feb 66 date. I know that dots and binding necks go well into 66, so there seems to be some parallel production going on then. I haven't really seen any B&B necks before mid 66, although I'm sure they're out there.

I wonder if mine is from an initial preproduction batch intended for Strats that never really happened, so they just threw them into the JM lot, and then later they switched over to full B&B?

I think David (Sookwinder) is maintaining a spreadsheet with serial numbers and dates for B&B. I'm sure he'll chip in when he sees this...
Man, that's a nice one you're getting!

Thanks Doug. I suspect that the photos don't really do it justice. Looks like this and my 72 thinline will arrive within days of each other. Talk about an early christmas!

Re: Earliest Blocks and Binding JM neck?
congrats.. that's a really nice one and it's definitely got the earliest B&B neck I've seen
mine is september '66 and my old D&B neck was march '66 so there was some overlap there for sure

Did you get it for that bid that's showing? What a deal!
I had one Jaguar that was almost that clean, it was a '69. It's in that album I posted earlier. Even a non-guitar guy who saw the pics at work today commented on it in particular. Those bursts really shine!

Re: Earliest Blocks and Binding JM neck?
The burst on the back looks a bit odd to me, but then again, they were hardly standard.
The seller split the difference between my registered final bid and their reserve, so I got it for $2500. I'm quite happy with that!
Yeh, I noticed that Jag, really nice - your pool sets it off nicely!
J - I'm happy for you that you're keeping your JM - I got some nice info from your detail pics.

WHAT IN THE HECK?zhivago wrote: the one I used to have was stamped 13OCT66B
did you sell it to anyone in virginia? and when?
how many Jazzmaster necks do you think they made per day?
and has anyone around here ever had the same day before?
it guess it's not too strange i know they made more than one per day.... but wow..i guess it could happen

Re: Earliest Blocks and Binding JM neck?
Not so odd... The stamp is not a date. The 13 is the model code. Alot of B-width Jazzmaster necks left the factory in October of 66!WHAT IN THE HECK?

Re: Earliest Blocks and Binding JM neck?

Here is a 'cut and paste' from jimshine.com. This is Jim's own work and the result of his excellent research. I don't think he would mind it appearing here, and I give him full credit:

Fender Neck Codes 1962-1972
Fender began using a part code on necks rubber stamped on the end starting in April 1962. The Codes appear as such:
Example- 1 MAY 62 B
1 is a part code (not day of the month)
MAY is the month
62 = 1962
B= the nut width
The part codes are:
1- Jaguar 1962-1965
2-Stratocaster 1962-1965
3-Telecaster
4-Jazzmaster 1962-1965
5-Precision Bass
6-Bass 6
7-Jazz Bass
8-Musicmaster II, Mustang, Duo-Sonic II 1964-1965 22 fret 24" scale model
9-Musicmaster II, Mustang, Duo-Sonic II 1964-1966 21 fret 22 3/4" scale Model also found on '69 Swinger "Arrow/Musiclander"
10*- Coronado 1 and 2 and some 1966 Jazzmaster and Stratocaster necks
11-Bass 5
12-Electric 12 and Maverick/Custom model
13- Stratocaster 1966-1968, many 1966 Jazzmaster's too
14-Coronado 12
15-Jaguar 1966-1972
16-Musicmaster II, Mustang, Duo sonic II, and Bronco
17-Mustang Bass and MusicMaster Bass
18-Coronado Bass
19-Jazzmaster and Coronado 2

3/4- Musicmaster and Duo Sonic 21 fret small headstock first version 1962-early 1964
* Fender Jazzmaster and Stratocaster necks that have these codes have the appropriate full CBS headstock shape. If you see one of these with a Coronado headstock shape, small Strat headstock shape, or weird hybrid of old small and large headstock shapes, it is a reworked Coronado neck.
