Epiphone Casino Upd...I (don't think I)want one+My trip to Guitar Center

Post by RumorsOFsurF » Mon Dec 10, 2007 7:14 pm

I've wanted a Casino for a long time, but the GAS has been dormant.  I've actually never bought a guitar that wasn't a Fender!  :o

Anyway...I've just been thinking about Casinos a lot lately, and I'm thinking about buying one, likely Natural...

Thoughts?
Are the new ones pretty decent?
How are the pickups?
I know hollowbodies are more prone to feedback, but how much?

It's this guy's fault!  >:(

I just took in a dead mint used Epi Casino with a HSC at work (Korean) in natural.

I have one and I absolutely love them.  I definitely recommend replacing the 3 way switch with a Switchcraft on the Koreans... those switches are notorious pieces of crap.  Yeah, they feed back much like a hollowbody, so you have to learn how to work around that, but it's not undoable.  Small price to pay for how good they sound.... even the least expensive ones are awesome.

Here's a link to  it.

Mine is a sunburst and I mounted a Bigsby to it.  I'm also a huge George Harrison fan, BTW

Well, I went to Guitar Center to play a Casino...An 80 mile drive, and they didn't have any. :-\  They had at least two last time I was there.

So, I decided to play around with a few other Epis.  The verdict: I really couldn't get in to any of them.  I played a Dot and a Valensi Riviera, and I didn't like either of them.  It's funny, I was pretty impressed with the Casino last time I played one, but I didn't like any of the Epiphones I played today.  I didn't even want to plug in.  I didn't like the neck profiles and the frets were rough.  I guess it all goes back to that Gibson style guitar thing.  I just never got along with them...Which is a shame, because I love the looks of a Casino, and also the way others make them sound.

I kept gravitating back to Fenders the whole time.  I did play a really nice MIM '72 Tele Deluxe through a Super Sonic :?.  It was one of three Deluxes they had, and it was great!  I've always wanted one, and now I've got GAS for one... ::)  I sort of let that GAS go once I bought the Bigsby, thinking I wouldn't need any more Teles.  Now I find myself really wanting one.  Those Wide Range RIs do sound great, even if they aren't like the originals.

I also played a new Jagmaster that was actually very nice.  The neck felt really good, almost like a worn off finish.

They had a Silver Sparkle Jagmaster that looked really cool, but the frets were horrible.  I looked down the board and there were high frets everywhere. :-X  The 2 point trem was nicer than the 6 screw style on the new ones, though.

Yes, I do!  I think they'll probably be just a little (a lot) out of my price range at this point, though.  :(
