i've been working on an overhaul of my dad's strat copy for several months, and last night i finally got off my ass and finished it. both me and my dad have always felt that there was something missing with the switching on strats, each pickup sounds great on its own, but the 'quack' positions never appealed to either of us. so what i did was wire the neck pickup (which is a vintage voiced humbucker, by his request for a more jazzy sound) to the middle position on the 5-way switch. so now we have the following combinations:
1. bridge
2. bridge+neck
3. neck
4. neck+middle
5. middle
it's amazing how different each position sounds. the bridge+neck sounds very much like the middle position of a '72 tele custom, and the neck+middle still sounds a bit quacky, but IMO a lot more classy. i just hope my dad will be as pleased with it as i am.

Re: alternative strat wiring
Yep, I did that to my strat copy a long time ago. It's unsettling how much the neck+bridge combo sounds like an offset!

Re: alternative strat wiring
I installed the Deaf Eddie Fat-o-caster mod in my partscaster. Some very useable extra sounds. The series settings in particular, and the neck+bridge setting, of course.

I swapped the middle knob on the guitar for a chicken head knob to make the settings more obvious. I love this mod, it really has doubled the amount of usable sounds from my strat.
