They had a campaign about a year ago in which they were marketing their guitars to the wives of yuppie scumbags as Christmas gifts for the husband.
I actually saw a TV commercial for Gibson guitars during the holiday season...I don't think I've EVER seen a TV commercial by any large guitar manufacturer before that!
The whole strategy of Gibson is to sell mediocre crap at premium prices to a select few individuals that have money to burn. They're selling their guitars as a luxury/status item instead of a working musician's instrument.
It's like Rolex watches. Everyone into mechanical watches knows that they're far from the best watch you can buy for the money...those that are uneducated associate the name Rolex with status and as 'being the best' when it comes to watches.
Gibson has become the same as Rolex in my opinion. They are selling a name and image but there are MUCH better guitars you can get for less money.
Agreed. Not that I wouldn't take a 335 if given to me, though.

I don't normally like SGs too much, but that's pretty nice looking.

SGs rule! They are the only Gibsons I like but, I like them a lot...The only thing though is that the fretwire on these things is HUGE. I can get used to the 12" radius but the frets is bugging me out.

I don't like the FAT necks most SGs seem to have, and the bodies are too small for me.
Of course, Jeff Tweedy, Angus Young, and many others do really cool things with them.

Yeah I tried a so-called fat 50's neck on a Les Paul and it wasnt near as fat as a nomaster tele neck, which to me is too fat. This one has the slimmer 60's neck.
Angus Young is mainly why I like the SG...His tone is perfect rock and roll IMO and he's short like me! Ive given up on buying a Jazzmaster mainly cuz the body is too big. I just look goofy with one. I love my Jag though and have been playing it a lot more lately since I switched to wound strings (as of 2 days ago)

I guess I've never played one with a slimmer neck.

Maybe I should.
Yeah, Angus is great. Definitely a guilty pleasure.

I don't agree, guitarmole. I've played several with those trems and really liked it (enough to consider getting one on my SG) - sure, you can't divebomb with it, but it was never meant for that. It's really meant for the occasional waggle, and makes a great "shoegaze" type tremolo.

that's nice to hear, since i've been considering putting a vibrola on my upcoming SG project.

A vibrola would be really great, Jonas. The cool thing is that if you don't like it you can take it off and there's only a couple of screw holes in the body - nothing major.

You could always put one of those Les-trems on them. I've thought about putting one on my SG Classic, but I rarely ever play mine so I'd rather keep mine stock.

Ugh seeing that pic makes me want to get the p90 sg again. I just don't like the dots, or rather I prefer the trapezoid inlays.
Was Pete using a p90 SG on 'Live at Leeds'?
