Re: Johnny Marr Sig Jaguar
I've had my Marr Jag since December and I've had trouble bonding with it. Absolutely love the feel, the design, the neck, the trem, and the case. Changed the bridge for a Staytrem and dig that. The electronics are what bother me though. Maybe it's my inexperience with Jaguars, or with single coils in general (I've only had humbucker guitars, and then my current Jazzmaster with AV 65 pickups). I have so much noise on all 4 positions that I'd never be able to use it for recording. I also have the issue others have mentioned in this thread where the volume and tone knobs basically drop off almost completely below 8 or so. Has anyone changed out the pots to fix that situation, and if so, what worked?
For the pickup noise, does shielding help or anything else, or is that just what single coils do?

Oh also, as others have mentioned, there's a bit of a fuzzy residue feel on the neck (haven't tried sanding it down with 0000 wool or anything as it doesn't bother me much), and the finish is very fragile. I played it a dozen times since owning it and have all kinds of button scratches from my shirts on the back and the strap has already scuffed up the finish near the strap buttons.

Yeah the finish on my friends is still really awful on the neck and he's had it for a long long time at this point. Just gonna sand it lightly and get it the fuck off there cuz its gross as hell

Maybe the wiring is loose or the output jack is miswired?Hoyt54 wrote:I've had my Marr Jag since December and I've had trouble bonding with it. That's unfortunate, just that one. The neck is probably the best thing about the guitar.Mechanical Birds wrote:Yeah the finish on my friends is still really awful on the neck and he's had it for a long long time at this point. Single coils make noise, but not more than a Jazzmaster, which you seem to be used to since you've already got one. Jazzmaster pickups are just single coils with more surface space to pick up noise from (or at least, that's how a tech I trust described them). If you're holding the guitar and rotate in a circle, are there two points in the room where the noise goes away almost entirely? If so, great. Stand there when recording. If not, does the noise level drop at all when you touch something metal on the guitar? Could be a grounding problem.Hoyt54 wrote:For the pickup noise, does shielding help or anything else, or is that just what single coils do?

The noise on mine (on any and all pickup selector settings) doesn't diminish unless I'm angling the guitar down toward the ground. Other than that, it doesn't matter what room of my house I'm in or which way the guitar is facing or how far from the amp it is. I dropped it off on Saturday at a shop near me and the tech will have a look this week and add copper tape shielding if needed. Hoping they'll be able to figure out the problem. I've read similar problems on other forums and people say copper shielding did the trick for them.

All of my jags have required the copper tape shielding.
There was noise which stopped when you touched any metal part of the guitar.
The shielding eliminated the noise.

I have a new "JagMarr" and love it so far but I do get a lot of pickup buzz / hum. Glad to see this is addressed here. Anything additional you can do besides the copper tape shielding you mention?? The strange thing is that I get way more hum in the 2-pickup position where the pickups are in series, supposedly like a humbucker. Is this common? Seems like the humbucker position would be less hum, obviously. I really like the way the guitar sounds in that pickup position. I did notice you can touch the chrome on the body and the buzz goes away. I wonder if you could somehow insulate under the chrome plate on the top left of the body or something like that. But I'll try the copper tape shielding for sure.

The Bareknuckle pickups in the Marr Signature are not constructed RW/RP (which provides the hum-cancelling effect) like the overwhelming majority of Fender single coil sets, so not really strange at all.telecustom wrote:The strange thing is that I get way more hum in the 2-pickup position where the pickups are in series, supposedly like a humbucker. This is by design; a deliberate decision by Johnny Marr, as he claims it sounds better. I guess he ignores the noise.

Is it an easy fix to set them up with the hum cancelling?? It really is only that pickup position where it's that bad. I'll try the shielding first.
Thanks for the info

Got my Jag back from the shop on Monday and was disappointed to find that even copper tape in the pickup cavities didn't have any affect on the constant hum in any of the 4 positions. I'm just going to sell it now I think. It hasn't really been the sounds I was looking for anyways so maybe it's for the best.

There is a solution to your problem, albeit not exactly super cheap. It originally came in Suhr guitars, but is now called the Ilitch system.Hoyt54 wrote:Got my Jag back from the shop on Monday and was disappointed to find that even copper tape in the pickup cavities didn't have any affect on the constant hum in any of the 4 positions. But if you haven't bonded with the guitar, then probably best to move it on.

Also, Kinman pickups offer Jag pickups. They'll definitely sort your hum problem, but they will sound a bit different from what you have in there already.Hoyt54 wrote:Got my Jag back from the shop on Monday and was disappointed to find that even copper tape in the pickup cavities didn't have any affect on the constant hum in any of the 4 positions. A friend of mine has a set of Kinman Tele pickups and they sound amazing.
