New short scale neck from Eden

Post by kdanie » Fri Apr 22, 2016 8:39 am

I've been looking for a couple short scale necks at a reasonable (cheap) price. Used Squire Jag necks are about $110 and I would spend WAY too much time stripping the poly off and shooting lacquer or rubbing on tru-oil. I was cruising ebay a couple weeks ago and saw that Eden now has 24" scale paddle head necks in rosewood and maple finger boards for $69 OBO. I grabbed the last maple they had in stock for $65/free shipping:

Image

The paddle head won't fit a Fender Jag/Stang headstock without some work- If you lay out the headstock and carefully slice off the unused upper part you could glue it to the bottom and it should fit at least a strat headstock. I'll try that on a rosewood neck in the future.

In this case I'm not doing anything Fender so it works for me, Thanks to Deed_Poll for the design and sending the PDF.

The maple neck will go on this one:

The rosewood is 24 3/4 scale and will go on my upcoming Deed_Poll v2 project.

They need the tuner holes drilled, finish sanding and a few coats of tru-oil and they will be ready to go.

I used an Eden 24 3/4 neck just like the rosewood shown above on Deed_Poll v1 and with a little fret work it's great, it appears Eden's fretwork is improving these don't have the sharp fret ends the previous neck had and they look pretty level-I'll do a quick fret level, re-crowning and polish anyway just to be sure. Oh, the installed bone nut needs a little work too but that doesn't take much time if you have a set of nut files.

I'll post a pic of the guitar with the maple neck in a couple days when I get it back together.

They look really nice! I think that head shape will suit the brown Jag-type design really nicely. I like a good long headstock.

If I recall correctly, you can get 6 inline tuners on that shape too if you want it - would probably work well for a XII if you should make one.

very cool. What's the neck feel like, profile and fretboard radius?

+1 on how the neck feels!

Your space-age Jag thingamajig has been one of my favorite designs for a LONG time and that head shape will look amazing!!

I actually had to shorten the headstock 1/2", the paddle was just that much too short. I think it's a great shape, the offset curves at the bottom and staggered 3x3 tuners add interest - the best part is you won't see it anywhere but here and in your renderings. I'm sure at full length it would take 6x6 tuners for a XII. I'd like to do one someday but no time this year.

I've never measured the fretboard radius, I would guess it's 12", I'll have to put a gauge on it one of these days. I'm not good enough to have a radius preference so I don't really pay much attention to it- just set the strings up even across the frets and as low as I can get them without fretting out or buzzing. The back shape is a basic C, not really thin though, I'll put the calipers to it next time I'm in the shop. Hard to get real projects done, the mosquitoes are REALLY thirsty this time of year in the north woods.

Got the finish sanding done so I laid it on the body to see how it looked:

Image

I like it. Maybe tomorrow morning I'll get the tuner and mounting screws drilled before I loose too much blood.... Then I can get it back in the house and a couple coats of Tru-oil sealer. I need to round up a set of 3x3 locking tuners, should be in the shop SOMEWHERE.

This neck is .780" at the first fret and .880" at the 12th, thinner than I expected.

The rosewood is .880" at the first, .950 at the 12th. I just realized this neck is one I've had for a few years.

I have a newer 24 3/4" rosewood neck that is .800 at the first and .900 at the 12th. This neck was bought early last fall and is noticeably nicer wood and better build quality than the older rosewood neck.

Got the tuner holes drilled this morning, I'll get the mounting holes drilled for the steel inserts shortly, I really like the steel inserts/machine screws to the normal wood screws. I feel I can get a tighter neck body connection for a clearer tone, some say it doesn't matter but I'll keep using them anyway, they don't cost much and it makes removal/installation multiple times easier without messing up the holes.

It looks better with the tuners installed:

Image

With the maple neck I think it needs new knobs, maybe more chrome:

Some cool FAT chrome knobs, for the FAT tonz?? Probably too much.

Image

Classic Tele:

Image

I have some tele knobs with abalone tops, if I only had abalone dots on the fretboard.

Maybe more black to go with the pickups?? Tele deluxe witch hats:

Image

Jag:

Image

Basic black generic knobs:

I could dig even deeper into my knob drawer... It's good to have such choices to make on a rainy Saturday.

Nice! I actually really like the generic knobs, the satin look really works with the natural body and dark pickups. But looking at it with the maple neck maybe the Tele knobs... A LP Special style pickguard would also be cool to contrast the neck.

Loving the look with the tuners on.

The satin black have been my favorite for a while, I bought 8 several years ago-used 4 on the Deed_Poll v1 so if I use two on this I'll still have 2 for a future project- maybe on my P51 Mustang project. It's a spanish cedar 'stang that will be painted silver with brushed aluminum pickguard, black lipstick pickups and maybe some pinup girl nose art... The body is about ready for paint so it will likely be finished right after the La Cabronado which will get repainted & assembled once the weather warms & dries out a little. I need a bigger guitar rack!! At least I can build that while the weather is still wet & cold.

I gave the rosewood neck some tru-oil, a fret level (didn't need it, a good polish would have been enough)/re-crown/polish then glued in a bone nut and filed it and finally mounted it on my favorite 24 3/4" scale guitar:

Image

A quick set up and it plays great and looks much better than the old PRS-esque headstock. This neck even has some flame on the headstock and back.

Wow those necks look great. I was looking for something just like this a few months ago for my mustang style build. Ended up making my own neck, but it's great to know there's an affordable option out there for short scale necks.

Do these have a strat style curved heel or is it flat like on a tele?

They have a curved heel. It's a pretty good neck, the fret work is actually very good.

I just picked up another one of these with a rosewood fret board. I had to add about 1/2" to get a JM headstock on it. Four coats of Tru-oil and a buff with OOOO steel wool and it's SLICK!! Frets seem nicely done on this one too. It will end up on a Spanish cedar 'stang soon. $55 shipped is the best bang for the buck I've found.
