Anyone have a tracing of a JM pickguard?

Post by jamrine » Tue Feb 19, 2008 9:22 am

I want to make a custom pickguard for my JM build.  I am going custom because I am taking out some of the circuitry/controls.  Does someone have a tracing/template of a JM pickguard (MIJ or vintage, don't care) that they could post as a PDF or something?

Thanks!

There are pdfs on the Fender website that you can scale up to get the pickguard shape. Look in the support section for the Jazzmaster parts layout diagram, right down near the bottom of the diagrams page I think. Scale the drawing up so the distance from nut to the middle of the 12th fret is 12.75".

I tried blowing one of these up on the copier at work last night.  I haven't had the chance to measure it out yet.  When you blow it up to fit the pickguard on an 11x17 sheet, you lose the 12th fret, so my measurement reference is gone.  I will have to see if I can work out the dimension between pickup centers or some other reference.  I have a body drawing someone on the MIMF did at home, so I will check it out this weekend.

The distance between the neck pocket and the centre-line of the bridge holes should be 7 1/4", if that's any help. I found loads of inaccuracies on that MIMF drawing - the depth of the neck pocket, for a start, and the actual body shape appears to be slightly wrong, I think. Beware!

Cool, thanks for the heads-up.  I will get the PG nailed down and adapt the body for the guard shape.  As for the routs, I would have adjusted those based on hardware anyway.  I thought that neck pocket sounded wrong.  I will probably do a setup on the end of a 2x6 to get things in the ballpark before cutting the body.

Hey theworkoffire, I saw in your Buickmaster thread (awesome project, by the way), that you modded the drawings from the MIMF.  What format do you have those drawings in, and would you consider sharing them?  I have access to multiple CAD programs here at work, so format should not be a problem if it is something reasonably standard.

I am struggling a bit with my crude images to get the dimensions to line up correctly for having something that will intonate when I install a neck and such.
