How about a "like" button for posts?

Post by Maggieo » Mon Nov 06, 2017 9:24 am

A bunch of other BBCode forums have 'em and it's a way to let someone know you read their post, if nothing else.

Has been discussed previously. Thankfully... 'no':

No like/dislike or vote up/down functions will be added. I really don't care for that functionality in a forum context. I think we've done well keeping OSG a pretty level headed environment for people and making these sorts of changes could definitely jeopardize the vibes.
This place not being like a bunch of other forums is what makes it special.

I like the idea of it not being available by default, but i also like the idea of it being selectable for those that wish to partake in it.

Providing users with the option is i think better than telling them what they should want.

The suggestion was for a 'like' button, not a 'like / dislike' button. They are rather different things.

If we can't have a 'like' button, how about an 'ignore thread / forum' button (ie kind of the opposite) ? I've only been here a while, but I've already felt severely in need of one .... on those topics that have nothing to do with guitars. I would much prefer if they never came up in my 'new posts' list.

I have to agree that there's a difference between allowing "likes" and having a downvote system. The latter is extremely toxic to a community IMO, since it discourages people from contributing. I don't like the idea of anyone feeling bad for putting in their two cents about guitars, gear, or music.

I'm with Andy, though, since I enjoy that this little corner of the internet is free from the social media trappings of likes/upvotes/retweets. I don't participate in any web sites or apps that are based on those things, because I find the whole thing sort of nauseating - it fucks with people's psychology in several ways, but I won't get into that here for fear of downvotes on my post ;)

No upvote-downvote thing, just a "like" or "thanks" button. It works very well on the photography forums I frequent and everyone knows who hit like or thanks.

It's a way to show appreciation, without, say quoting the post and only adding "thanks" to the follow up.

It's pretty easy to just scroll past them, it isn't as if this is an incredibly busy forum.

Personally I'd worry that having a like button might start to erode the amount of conversations. Perhaps I've read too much dystopian fiction but I worry about a slide into button pushing instead of longform contributions. However I'm not a Facebooker and I'm probably misunderstanding how these things work.

On the plus side anything that kills the vapid +1 or my all time OSG hate, the meme as reply, would always be welcome.

I agree with David...this is by no means an official OSG Staff opinion, just my personal view.... I’d rather we all talked more, instead of just clicking on a button. Without actual discussion which would yield things to read, this forum would die :)
