Blasphemy or Stroke O' Genius?

Post by Bryherb » Sun Feb 24, 2008 4:54 pm

Behold my Fellow Offsetters, I have for you a quandry. What's your take on this "Repair/Modification"?. Blasphemy or Stroke O' Genius? The Client liked the shape and size of the Mustang body and the electronics/switching  but just could not bond with the short scale aspects of a Fender Mustang. The Client also liked the scale length and feel of this Mex Start neck. The earlier repair/mod was just installing the Tune-O-Matic bridge but problems with the Mustang tremolo being too close to the TOM bridge caused tremolo tuning problems and whatnot. So I installed the stop bar tailpiece on this guitar and now it plays great and The Client is happy. Do note how the TOM bridge is slanted more so than what is on Gibson's typically. The previous repairperson had to slant the bridge that much to drill the bridge post on wood, Remove the Mustang bridge/tremolo plate and you'll see the bridge post is right next to the treble side tremolo spring cavity.

doesnt that make the plate redundant?

its not the worst thing you can do to a guitar but i personally prefer the short scaleness of the stang

To each their own, I guess.  To me, those mods take a lot of the "Mustang" out of the guitar...At least it's not vintage. ;)

Haha, yeah. I don't actually mind it. The TOM is fine, I'm not really a fan of the Mustang trem, but I do like the scale. It's all cool though. The neck is a bit light, maybe it needs some oil...

I have a tune-o-matic setup like that on my Jag-Stang. I kept the 24" scale neck though.

That looks really good IMO.

(don't like jag stangs though)
Someone knows where I can find the nearest woodchipper to throw my pieces of junk into?

Will the guitar intonate with the TOM all angled like that? Looks like good work though. :)

Thanks. I don't particulary like Jag-Stangs either. They're ok, nothing special. That guitar currently resides in my closet in parts. I think I'm going to go put it back together in a little while.

can't you acheive the same result by removing the springs, flipping the tailpiece, and screwing it to the plate?  ???

Whatever works... if the client is happy then you've done your job. Nice clean work! ;)

The thing is that I get a bad rash out of TOM's with stop tailpeices, but that looks way better - then again I don't have much left for LP's and love the Marauder with all the chromed cover plates....
