I have a Mighty Mite neck I would like to paint the headstock on to match the body (when I have the body and have it painted and blah, blah details, details...).
Do I need to sand off the finish of the headstock to do this? The finish on there is pretty thin it seems, and I don't know what it is (just thin lacquer, maybe?).
Any experience here?

Re: MM neck - headstock paintjob
Unfortunately, I do have experience trying to get through the MM finish. It's a tough one, and thick. Just sanding the headstock face shouldn't be too hard though. Start with 100 grit, and quickly go to 120, then 220. Spend some time on 220, and then finish with 320 grit. However, it may not be necessary . . . what are you planning to use for paint? If you're not planning on using a Nitrocellulose based paint (Reranch), then you should have no problem.

Even if the neck is poly finish, you can sand it smooth and use that for a base even with nitro. I just did this with Reranch Daphne Blue, and it came out fine. On the Reranch website the instructions include a mention of using the existing poly finish as a base since it is so tough to remove.
