the freezer will only crack nitro paint that has hardened.

AV = nitro clear coat
CIJ = something chromeian acid wouldn't even shit.

try using your car keys
relaxing alternative to doing actual work ...

I don't think the freezer will make any difference to the super-thick finish Japanese guitars have.

if you had a guitar with a nitro finish (AVRI or vintage) then a freezer *could* work.

keep in mind the shock from cold to hot would have to be drastic for the wood to move and crack the finish

also, the finish could crack towards unexpected directions, and not downwards (like with most vintage guitars)

i dunno, throwing it into the freezer might work, i have some checking in the poly on both my japanese jazzmasters. but it doesn't look anything like checked nitro finishes, you get these big long cracks that go all the way through the finish, and you can really feel the edges with your fingers. it doesn't look vintage, just broken.

With poly: car keys, very fine sandpaper to take off the shine, razorblade for fake cracks. But chances are great you'll end up with something you'd rather not look at. I know what I'm talking about, haha.

StarOnFire did some nice subtle aging on his CIJ poly finish - index.php?topic=9809.0  :D
The 40 year old poly finish on my Klira jag has a few of the cracks Jonas described - they snake around all over the place - nothing like nitro, and not worth encouraging, really.

If you're that bothered about the finish why not strip it and re-finish it in nitro?

This happened to my AVRI neck from being shipped during a blizzard, the body has no checking at all:

My neck isn't that bad IRL. Actually it does look cool with the lines, but you can barely see them and you can't feel them at all. I posted that pic to show that I feel the paint on the body makes it a lot harder to get any kind of checking. The paint on my body is flawless with no checks at all but obviously the neck has checked. Here is the neck in more natural light:

This is what a freezer & a can of anti-freeze does to nitro. The guy who re-finned my JM did this. He later confessed that the anti-freeze method was still a bit experimental!!  >:(

Image

All around the edges the checking is in straight lines, kind vintage correct. The spots that got the anti-freeze treatment have a spider legs effect. If he hadn't used the spray I reckon it'd have turned out perfectly.

I've asked him to re-relic it without the crazy spider-legs but he's kinda gone off the radar.

I actually like the results but its not very authentic looking. If you look closely you can see a Joy Division album cover in there!!!  ;)  :D
