Ok, so I want to buy a 58-64 Jazzmaster, suggestions?

Vintage & Rare, Denmark St.

The link seems to involve a bit of brokerage, judging by the locations given, but it at least shows there are some out there in your price range.
I'm not sure that website is connected to the shop of the same name on Denmark street, but I could be wrong. It's a good source though, nonetheless.

You could keep looking around on second hand websites in and around britain.
For Belgium: 2de hands.be
the Netherlands: marktplaats.nl
Germany ebay: kleinanzeigen.de
I check these websites almost daily and from time to time, nice bargains turn up.
I missed an original 1964 Fender Jaguar for 2000 euro by a hair last month.
My '64 refin, but otherwise original Jazzmaster I got for 2400 euro last year.
Look out, try to buy private and have a bit of luck.
If you don't have or want to spend all the time looking around, I think a dealer is a good option.

For what it's worth, a consideration for me when I was vintage Fender Jazzmaster (and Jag) hunting was neck comfort. Based on my experience so far:

'59 - '62 - slim necks - someone more knowledgeable than I can say for sure whether there is any difference in these years. I have had both a '62 Jag and AVRI '62 JM and Jag guitars - Loved the pickups on all of them but the necks were too thin for my comfort.

'63 - thicker necks - I have both a '63 JM and '63 Jag. For me, these necks are perfect for my big ol' hands. Truly the sweet spot in neck comfort for me.

'64 - '66 - Thicker, but different from the '63 to me in regards to feel yet still very comfortable necks for me. I've owned a '66 Jag, an AV65 JM, have an AV65 Strat, and the Johnny Marr Jag (with "Mid-60s" neck). All quite comfy necks for me.

Good hunting! :)

Lately I've been seriously thinking about getting an old Jazzmaster (1958-64). I know a few things about them, but am no expert at all. So here's probably the right place to ask:
If you were willing to spend 4-5k$ on a player Jazzmaster which way would you go? I'd want it to sound, feel and look good (and old).

Btw, I'm located in Europe, so I would probably have to buy from the States. Thanks in advance.
Hey OP - there's a '65 for sale in Belgium at the moment (check out the For Sale section) that seems to be close to your budget. I've no connection to the vendor ... just spotted it earlier.

I know you're thinking '64 (pre-CBS) ... but there's nothing wrong with a D&B '65. I've had a few vintage JMs over the years - the nicest is the '62 that I now own, but the close second was a '66 B&B refin that was, to all intents and purposes, as good - the main reason I kept the '62 instead of the '66 was it was original compared to a refinished guitar.

If you're intent on a pre-CBS guitar only ... be patient. I found my '62 for a price within your budget here on OSG - and it is a thing of beauty. They do crop up - so put together your war chest and be ready to jump on one when it comes up. In general I would have fewer issues dealing with anyone here on OSG (even if you've never bought here before) than in dealing with a random store or Reverb randomer - folk here value their reputations and if a regular OSGer is selling a guitar they're unlikely to be trying to pull a fast one. My own Jazzmaster was bought on the basis of photos and assurances from the seller (Ultraboreal - a complete gent) that it was a good one ... and he was right.

Oh ... the other thing to consider on that Belgian Jazzmaster is that it's not going to cause any tax issues (as you would have buying from the US).

For $5k you could definitely get an all original 63-64, but you have to be patient. I got my all original 63 for $4850, but I had to be patient and really scour the internet. You could definitely get a 58-62 with issues for around that, but for me personally I always prefer the guitar to be as untouched as possible.

Thanks for the replies. I'm scouting the market again. Being located in Europe it's not as simple buying from the States. Although prices are better there, it's always a pita the shipping / customs thing. So, If anybody has a hint about a reasonable priced JM in Europe or in the UK, let me know.
