polyurethane over nitrocellulose

I have a full scale home made guitar with about eight coats of clear Simi gloss nitrocellulose lacquer on it. It has aged nicely over the past several years. I am not satisfied with the sound the Strat pickups give and I plan on replacing them with a Jazzmaster set up. While it is apart I would like to go from the Simi gloss to gloss. There is no problem with that, as I will just wet sand it with 2400 grit paper and then shoot another five or six coats of gloss nitro over it. It has a through body neck. I like the feel of a polyurethane neck over lacquer and am wondering if it can be sprayed over the nitrocellulose? (yea - I know, It looks like a short scale guitar but the bridge and neck was moved back towards the but of the guitar about 2 1/2 inches. It has a 25 1/2 inch scale)

Yes. HOMEMADECASTER (Serial Number 0001) I made it in 2006. I took the body design from a Jazzmaster. This gives it the offset look. I placed the tuning keys in the same position as my 59 Jazzmaster and later read that Leo had moved then farther into the headstock as they were splitting. I put a piece of aluminum there to strengthen it. I liked the double cutaway of the stratocaster so I used a little of that idea. I also liked the hook on the top horn of the Rickenbacker so a little of that got tossed in. I never play above the 17 fret so I quit putting frets on when I reached the 19th. Mahogany and oak boards found in a trash pile made the body. The local street department gave me an old dented sign with bullet holes. That became the pickguard. It was fun to make and fun to play. Just wish I had put the Jazzmaster guts in it back in 2006.
