Could work if they have the right size. If you have some random tubing or rubber on-hand, I wouldn't hesitate to rig something up - but for me, elongating the springs is about as much as I ever needed to do anyway (usually then only the E, B, D.)

The advantage of the Staytrem nylon washers is that they are smaller than the screw diameter and so grip the intonation screw to stop it turning / rattling, while holding it forward. The disadvantage is that they are not attached to the bridge (AFAIK) so can become displaced and need re-adjusting (see below). Of course they could be glued in place with a drop of CA glue.

I have shorter screws from a cheapo chinese bridge off ebay. I still needed to keep the 1st string long to intonate, but I'd think the problem is on the 6th string usually. Must find some springs, it sounds like an idea!
