Pedals Straight to Interface?
Beginner question but does anyone do instrument to pedal and then straight into interface or is something recommended as a go between?
I’m using a focusrite clarett 4pre with logic into a Mac

Re: Pedals Straight to Interface?
I run my pedal board straight into my Presonsus Firestudio and then use an amp sim on the computer side and it works great.

Yeah for demoing songs at home, but I put an amp sim pedal at the end of my chain then into a DI before hitting the preamp input. I use the JOYO american sound amp sim. Tried a bunch but this one sounds the best to me.
If OSG has tort me anything...

Re: Pedals Straight to Interface?
I think my Presonus cheap interface warns against using active pickups (at least without adjusting the volume way down.) I assumed that caveat also applied to pedals?

Re: Pedals Straight to Interface?
I could be wrong, but I believe that Sune from The Raveonettes uses a Jazzmaster into a Boss fuzz (FZ-2?) straight into the board. Obviously, he's probably doing it at a studio with a ridiculously expensive board, but still.
I've done it both straight and with a DI pedal, and I'm not as big of a fan of the sound for guitar. For bass, I prefer it. But I've also never really dug that deep into the settings when trying to do it with guitar. I'm sure you could make it sound good.

Re: Pedals Straight to Interface?
Bass can track well many ways, but guitar is typically different. I know there have been a lot of people that go straight into the board and get good sounds (Lennon, Reverend Gibbons), but I think it takes some good pre’s, eq’s and other board magic happening in the background.
I want to try my Colourbox for that, to some degree, since that’s what it’s really supposed to be for. I may try to use the Iconoclast speaker emulator with it, to see if that makes any difference.

Re: Pedals Straight to Interface?
I go straight in 98% of the time, whether it be bass, guitar, synth, Rhodes... I just prefer it in most cases. I can always add later, depending on the style or what the song needs. Running it back through either a reamper to a mic’d amp, running it through pedals, or just adding an amp sim, I prefer to have those choices when it comes time to mix. There are many times I’ll leave it as is, just the straight signal with some compression and eq and call it a day.

The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

Re: Pedals Straight to Interface?
I’m a kindergartner when it comes to recording. There’s a lot to learn there.
It’s not getting a lot of spit & polish on the back end, so I try to capture it live as best I can. When I do record.
Hell, I can barely mix worth a shit, I think. And also probably anybody that has any idea what they’re actually doing.

Re: Pedals Straight to Interface?
I use one of those cheap ART tube preamps. It sounds better than going straight into my interface, which is a presonus firestudio, at least to my ears. Especially for bass.

guitar straight in can be a great sound of its own, try it out and see how you like it! test it out in a mix, try to learn and embrace the various sounds you can get out of what you’re working with, then let your ears make the call for you.

Re: Pedals Straight to Interface?
I've recorded guitar straight into an M-Track for years with the occasional pedal in between. Now I prefer to run it through my Vox PF15r, using the pre out to send signal to the interface

Except for maybe the pedal. He uses whatever suits the sound he wants, but a main piece on his board, is a RAT. But there have been fuzz factories, geiger counters, and various other trippy things on there.
The first Raveonettes album where done in a studio with an old Neve 10 channel thing, but a lot of the things after have been done with a 500 series preamp, some Neve clones, some other things, whatever he thinks sounds good in his studio.

Re: Pedals Straight to Interface?
Sometimes it can be just what is needed for dreampop sounds. When there's no distortion in sight, and just some stacked verbs and delays.
Mainly because it then gets the intended stereo image without the bi-amp complications.
Although i suppose you can use the pedal as an outboard for a micced sound, or find a plugin that does the job.
It can give a much more synthetic, purer image of the verb-as-instrument.
Didn't cocteau twins do that sometimes?

Yes. On Heaven or Las Vegas especially, and lots of Eventide H-3000. Some of the distortion was Big Muff straight in too.jorri wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2019 2:21 pmSometimes it can be just what is needed for dreampop sounds. When there's no distortion in sight, and just some stacked verbs and delays.

Re: Pedals Straight to Interface?
Interesting. I’ve been hot on the Cocteau Twins for a while. I really need to wire my board for stereo use. I’ve got everything in mono mainly because I don’t gig with 2 amps but now since I’m looking to record more it will be usefulfuzzjunkie wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2019 6:32 amYes.
