Supro Wesbury : Offset or not ?

Post by lhwarp » Mon Oct 28, 2019 3:10 pm

Supro Reissue guitars can be considered Offset or not ?

Here in Europe, the Supro guitars are in the 800-1000 Euros range new at best today (Thomann, Woodbrass...) - a price that I find personally quite costy no matter the dexterity, and I would say the same for the amps of the brand :squint: .

And suddenly, a few days ago, on a local equivalent of an US Craiglist appeared a Lefty Supro Westbury - sold like new by a Crazy Lefty GASer in urgent need of cash - for only 300 Euros. :w00t:

She looks like this :

Image

For the price of a used Squier Classic Vibe Strat LH, I could buy something original, unseen instead... Maybe not really Offset, but with enough oddity or fancyness - like an Offset guitar. And it's not so frequent for us Lefties...

So I switched on :o - I wait for her to be delivered in the days to come... For the best 8) or the worse :fp: , Offset or not-so-Offset ;) !

Even though the guitar has a very symmetrical feel, its waist is definitely offset, so I say it qualifies. Congrats on the new purchase!
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

Hey man I saw this on G-T, and that color is great. I loved mine before I sold it to JF. Never had a chance to show it off 8)

d-Bridge makes a great bridge, I think they’re perfect for a Fender offset but can’t seem to get him to make one in the vein of an RSD or something completely new ;D

This looks gorgeous. Are those actually gold foil pickups or just lookalikes?

I would be interested in a goldfoil pickup guitar.

These are 'real' gold foils, as in they have gold foil on the top :)

Supposedly, they are pretty accurate repros of the Valco pickups found on certain original Supros. They are single coils too, though made to fit in the humbucker form factor. I've played vintage GFs from Harmony, along with Mojo Tone Teisco repors, and Novaks DeArmond types, and I can tell you these are very clear, most similar to the DeArmond types. Great pickups!

For the Supro reissue, rubber magnets were not used like the original Dearmond gold foils but alnico magnets and the pickup coil is not as flat.

This confuses me a bit, because the Valco pickups, etc, weren't made by DeArmond/Rowe. Vista-tones didn't have a gold foil top either, and I'm not sure of the magnet type used originally. All these confound the term "gold foil pickups". Hershey Bar's, no gold foil but they had some funky magnets and small flat coil--kinda gold foil-like without the foil.

I'd like to see a repro Supro pulled apart, just for fun, but I don't care what the magnet is, it's a killer pickup IME.

Should have said Dearmond "style", my bad as they were made by Valco.

My protractor plugin says it has a 5-degree offset. About the same as a Stratocaster.

And took some more acceptable pictures of that Supro Westbury 8) :

Those pics - taken indoor under a rainy/squally weather do not do justice to the very nice Turquoise Metallic color, unfortunately... :-[

Wait and See for testing... :wtf:

Quick test this evening of my Supro Westbury...

This guitar has the look and has the tone : the Gold Foil pickups are amazing... Twangy and percussive tone, nothing to do with the usual Fender.

No regrets - moreover considering the low price I paid for her !
