The guitar is a '65 AVRI, so these are the stock pickups. I tried Antiquities (I forget if they were 1 or 2, but the ones based around the '59 JM pickups). Those were a bit warmer and fuller. But they also had a lot more noise (I think they were wound hotter or something). I tried noiseless pickups in them, but I didn't care for those. They were midrangey in a bad way and compressed. Wouldn't a Vox just accentuate the problem of too many highs? I think of Vox as bright amps. Thanks!PJazzmaster wrote: ↑Fri Nov 15, 2019 7:45 amOh, that could be part of the problem, I like bright JM sounds but the AV65's were too bright for my taste (I didn't want to mess around with lower potentiometer values). I had a pair of AV65's in my AVRI62 JM for a while, I liked them overall better than some boutique JM PU's - with the tone rolled off - but finally went back to the stock AVRI JM PU's which I really like and they allow me too keep the amp tone knob in the middle at 5, even on a SF Princeton.
OR simply try out a VOX AC30 or AC15, those could be work well with your AV65 PU's.

That's the problem I'm having. Do you think that it's a brown princeton and not a reverb version is part of the issue?marqueemoon wrote: ↑Thu Nov 14, 2019 10:49 pmIn my experience a JM can sound brittle when clean or grainy in a bad way when driven through the wrong amp.
Fenders are usually a good match, but I can see that with a non-reverb Princeton.
My Supro has reverb, and when I put that on (even at just a low setting), it mellows out a lot of the highs.

Re: Jazzmaster -- best amp pairing
If you’re looking for vintage “American” tone, I’d suggest you check out the 60s Ampeg Reverberocket and Gemini’s; very close tonally to those Supros - chimey but with authoritative mids that keep them from getting buried in a mix.
I love how Fenders sound in isolation, but am rarely happy with how they fit into a mix - too brittle, not enough mids, tend to get lost in the sauce when playing with a couple other guitars and keys. I’ve found a happy medium with my Reverberocket and the other guitar play running some sort of SF Fender amp.
Have you thought about a speaker swap? Might help reinforce the frequencies that you’re lacking. It’s also possible that it’s just “not the amp for you”, just because it’s a ‘62 Princeton doesn’t mean it’s going to be good for *every* player and application.

Speaker swap, or else just a decent EQ pedal. It's easy to dial out highs and add mids. Surprised no one has suggested that yet.garyfanclub wrote: ↑Fri Nov 15, 2019 5:55 pmHave you thought about a speaker swap? Might help reinforce the frequencies that you’re lacking. What speaker would you guys recommend in a '62 princeton if I want to fatten up the tone a bit? I don't want super round just more balanced.

I think the overpriced Celestion Gold 10" is an astounding speaker. I'd be very surprised if Weber or GWS didn't make a comparable speaker for a 1/3 of the price.
I love Weber speakers, and have been impressed with every one i have bought. I have them in most of my amps.

I use my jazzmaster with a musicman HD 130 210 and it works and sounds great.

I have 2 Weber Silver Bells (12” & 10”). I have the 10” in a Vox AC4C1, and the 12” is in a cab that I use with a Deluxe clone. I don’t know if they’re Weber’s answer to a Celestion Gold or not, but they sound very good.tdbajus wrote: ↑Sat Nov 16, 2019 4:49 pmI think the overpriced Celestion Gold 10" is an astounding speaker. I think that WGS’ version of a Gold is the Blackhawk for 12”, I forget what is the closest in their 10” speakers. I had a WGS G12C, and it was nice,, but I sold it to get the Silver Bell instead, it’s better for my needs.
I’d love to try a Blackhawk, though.

This might be a stupid question but are any mods needed to put a 12" in a princeton?
And does it radically change the tone?

Well, you'd have to cut the baffle. People love it, but I think there are plenty of 10" speakers out there that sound wonderful. No need to deface the amp.

Re: Jazzmaster -- best amp pairing
An alternative, assuming there’s a speaker out option on your amp, would be to get (or at least try out) a 12” speaker in its own separate cab.
And if the internal speaker doesn’t cut out when you use the other out (some do, some don’t), you may find that you like the combination of a 10 & 12.

Re: Jazzmaster -- best amp pairing
I haven't had a Jazzmaster since I got my '65 Princeton Non Reverb, but my Jag is plenty bright through it. Same goes for my DeArmond equipped Guild Starfire. Super bright. Really have to use the volume/tone knobs on both to not be harsh.
My only constant experience with jazzmasters as part of my rig were an AV65 reissue and a custom semi hollow JM with Novak Jm-V/JM-Fat pickups, both through my Super Reverb reissue. Honestly, most things sound great through a Super Reverb, but I personally feel like that circuit/4x10 configuration works beautifully with jazzmasters and jaguars. Still bright but not excessively so, and with a massive low end that helps fill out the frequency spectrum coming from a JM. My jag running through the princeton doesn't sound as huge as it used to with the SR, but that's also a question of moving less air with a 1x10. I'd get another but Super Reverbs are too big for NYC living at the moment.
