Modding a WideRange (RI)?

Post by Gordon » Sat Mar 29, 2008 4:35 am

Maybe Curtis could help, here...

Here what a WRHB RI looks like from behind (beware of electronic porn):

The thing is splittable, with this mod, that actually requires to solder a few wires on the pickup. But what if I don't want to split it, but would rather want to allow the two coils to be wired either in series or in parallel? Using that schematic, which requires 4 wires.

According to this blueprint, bare (which I assume is soldered to the shielding/cover of the pickup) and brown go to ground, while black is the output. Fine. Looking at the pic above, I'm supposed to cut the white wire to cut the connection between the two coils, right? To make things easier, I'll give those two new wires names:

- top horizontal coil, next to brown: the letter X
- bottom horizontal coil, next to black: Alexander

Which would be wired that way:

Does someone find anything wrong there? Thanks for looking. :)

IIRC here (theworkoffire may please come to help) I think If you split it three strings go silent (or more quiet) because it's three pole peices on each coil that captures the sound....

excuse me for being such a noob.  :-[

:P
Someone knows where I can find the nearest woodchipper to throw my pieces of junk into?

That's why I don't want to split it, Monsieur J.... :D I want to be able to wire the coils in parallel rather than in series. Well, "want" is incorrect now, as I've changed my mind. Anyway, the RI are regular HBs in a larger casing, according to I-can't-remember-who; TWOF was probably referring to the original pickup (the link I gave in the previous post was about a RI, and nobody seemed to notice anything wrong).

Talking about me behind my back?!  :P

In terms of wiring the re-issues and originals are the same - the difference is in the magnets, not the basic layout, so this would work for both.

Fender's diagrams have the black as the ground and the brown as hot. http://www.fender.com/support/diagrams/ ... 02APg2.pdf

You might find this easier:Image

Mmh, now I feel like trying out this mod again... :-\ Except that, if I do, I'm an option short of what I first wanted to do due to lack of available space. :-\
