Thoughts on this '64 Jazzmaster?

Post by hverlind » Sun Apr 05, 2020 9:22 am

It's been well over 10 years now since I was last into buying guitars, but I've always dreamed of owning a vintage Jazzmaster with a matching headstock, so here we are... I actually quite like the looks of the late '60s models with B&B, but those custom colors don't really seem to be going for any less than the pre-CBS models?

So now I'm looking at this '64 Olympic White JM listed on Reverb. It looks a bit rusty, but claims to be all original, seems not too insanely priced (??), and I could get it shipped within Europe. It's still a lot of money though, and I've been out of this game for a while, so I was hoping some of you might want to weigh in here. Does this feel legit or does anything seem obviously off? Should I be able to get a better deal? Should I hold off a few months to see how this recession might affect prices?

Thank you!

I’m no expert but it looks pretty legit to me.
The only thing I was curious about was if they did matching headstocks for oly white in 64?

Didn't Jazzmasters have "witch hat" knobs by '64?

I always browse "Zhivago's vintage hotties" subforum to compare similiar aged models and check that features are consistent with the years.

One of the rarer/cooler custom colors (if it's original) and in unusually good condition. That they have a Jag in the same color from the same year seems a bit odd though.

I'd be surprised if that finish is original. But the guitar itself is legit. It has a "Musikhaus Barth" plate on the back of the headstock :) That is a good sign. Please do not remove!

It does mean that your guitar got officially imported by that store in Germany in the 60s. Musikhaus Barth was located in Stuttgart which makes sense, lot of US GI's there and loads of industry, so if there were people around who had money to afford a Fender. You will also find a lot of Höfner Guitars in Europe with the same plate on the back of the headstock.

I did talk to a lot of people about that over the years and we came to the conclusion that Fender Guitars were basically not really available in Germany until 63. People who owned Fender Guitars before 1963 got them from Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium or from Scandinavia. That changed at some point and it seems that Musikhaus Barth was one of first to import Fender Guitars, most likely starting in late 63 but not before.

Are you looking at the same guitar? I'm seeing a "Musikhaus Ehret" plate on the back of the headstock which was in Mannheim rather than Stuttgart.

Edit: I think Reverb tries to show you a similar listing when the original one sold. Try this link instead: https://reverb.com/item/32898512-fender ... _sold=true
