Re: Thread to predict currently cheap stuff that’ll skyrocket in value eventually
I really love the blog but seriously have no idea how they sustain any business whatsoever with every single item they stock listed for the absolute highest price on the entire internet. Maybe it’s because they do really great job wrt what they give people for the gear they bring in to sell, but obviously that’s not the case because no shop is gonna break the (at absolute most) 60% of common used prices threshold. I understand it’s a business but it’s impossible for me to not find shit like that annoying. Like once a month I flip thru the inventory but every single item they list is like 15% more than the next most expensive example from ebay/reverb. It’d be nice to ever, even once, see something I really love for sale from them and be able to even remotely feel like it’s a good price.cestlamort wrote: ↑Wed Mar 11, 2020 4:29 pmI don’t know when he mentioned them but they jumped on price here maybe 10-15 years ago (from $200 to $350) and are now $400-500. (Mrs Cestlamort got hers for $99 in SF in the late 90s). But I just saw a vibrochamp listed at $995(mike and mike) so maybe everything is expensive these days / trickle down price hikes as the Princeton reverbs et al get more expensive. (Maybe the big SF Fender amps are the bargains of the future?!)FMD wrote: ↑Wed Mar 11, 2020 3:10 pmI swear they used to be $100 (or less) until Dan Auerbach mentioned them (see my previous post). I haven't really been following the pricing for a bit, but I thought they were going for >$400 for beat up examples, with nice ones going for more than 5 bills.postchrist wrote: ↑Tue Mar 10, 2020 1:21 pmmusicmaster bass amps i guess have started to jump, but still occasionally sell for $300-350 which i think is pretty dirt cheap for how good they can sound. have been following these for years curious as to if they’ll go up in price. especially considering the rising cost of handwired, solid construction tube amps, i imagine many of the amps of yesteryear that still sell pretty cheap will eventually rise.
I think the Ibanez UE multieffects are still a deal (vs individual pedals).
The boss dm2w for less than $100 used is amazing, same goes for the DD-2/3 delays and old boss reverbs.

Give it a couple of months and then buy index funds.
This is an excellent rectangle

If they stop making the Marr jaguar I'd expect it to appreciate significantly. It may have a bit more cachet than the AV65, AVRI62.

Only issue with them is that, if they're anything like mine and have been gigged regularly- the finishes will all be absolutely beat to shit! Good job I never intend to sell.

Early chinese Squier Classic Vibe series. There is quite a hype around them and some of them aren't particularly common on the used market, like the 60s P-Bass. They will go into Japan Vintage territory eventually.

Re: Thread to predict currently cheap stuff that’ll skyrocket in value eventually
I can see the T-60 market slowly going up. Anecdotally, I bought a pristine 1978 T-60 for $300 from the original owner mainly because I thought they looked cool and heard they were pretty decent value guitars. I really liked it and thought it was very unique. A year passed and I was half-heartedly looking to thin out some guitars so I posted the T-60 for sale for what I thought was crazy money, $800. But, it sold, I'm assuming because its condition was so good. I immediately missed it and regretted selling. Fortunately I found a 1979 for sale nearby, from the original owner, and in even better condition than the first for $450. So I have my 2nd T-60 but it cost me 50% more in just one year
Also, T-60s are sort of catching on with younger bands for the same reasons Offsets in the 80s and 90s, ie cheap, good quality etc. Not that these bands are super huge but, hey, every little bit helps!

Really interesting thread. I agree with most suggestions already provided:
Faded SGs
Early, "rare" Squier classic vibe stuff
Any J.Mascis jazzmaster etc.
May I also suggest:
Seeing as a lot of nineties-era stuff is now 25+ years:
First generation MIM fender duo-sonics
Interesting MIM models in unusual colours (Tele w/neck humbuckers, etc.)
Fender Jag-stangs
Squier vista models..

I guess 'cheap' is relative here, but 60s SG Juniors still seem to be pretty undervalued on the vintage Gibson market, especially when compared to the prices LP Juniors are fetching these days. Same bare bones, P90-hacked-into-a-hunk-o'-mahogany goodness for a third the price.

anyone got a take on whether archtop guitars will ever take hold outside of jazz? surprised sometimes at how cheap you can still get a 60s gibson l-48, ny epiphones from the 50s, etc. especially considering the fact that they are only carved with solid woods in small quantities at very high prices today.
i’ve felt pretty lucky for a while that i tend towards archtops, got my 51 epiphone zenith for about 700 shipped about five years back, and at some point, provided prices stay somewhat stable, would love to pick up an old gibson.

The type of archtops you refer to were at the lower end of the range when they were made and as such price will be governed by what the top of the line models sell for, and they are relatively common compared to the top of the line.postchrist wrote: ↑Thu Apr 30, 2020 12:20 pmanyone got a take on whether archtop guitars will ever take hold outside of jazz? surprised sometimes at how cheap you can still get a 60s gibson l-48, ny epiphones from the 50s, etc. especially considering the fact that they are only carved with solid woods in small quantities at very high prices today.

And then there is the arguement that a modern guitar at the same price may be a better instrument, and without any age-related problems, than what was a "budget" guitar in the first place. Just because it is old doesnt always mean it is good.
However if you get the chance, play as many as the old gibsons as you can, I like mine.
