Not sure specifically when that product first came out. I first saw them in the wild a year or two ago.

That must be the case...but now that I'm used to it...I might have to stick with that mod. You still have that graffiti yellow Toro? That's my dream right there.blimpage wrote: ↑Sat Jun 13, 2020 9:30 pmWeird, I've had two of the '98 Toronados and they've both had the pots working opposite to yours. Mine have both been:Justjoe wrote: ↑Sat Jun 13, 2020 3:52 pmThe Toronado was pretty close to the original thing. Definitely not the same quality on the neck (super glossy, not a fan of Indian laurel) and this one had some bizarre wiring issues. All of the pots worked counterclockwise opposed to the standard clockwise. The neck pickup only had a weak signal when volume was set to about the middle. And the control knobs controlled the opposite pickups from an original Toronado. On my '98 the the top row of knobs control V/T to the bridge and the bottom set control V/T on the neck. This was flipped. Very strange! Leads me to believe this one was wired incorrectly.
(and when in the middle position, the bridge pots are disengaged so the neck pots control everything.)
Sounds like maybe the Squier has the standard wiring (save for the counterclockwise pots) and your '98 is wired backwards?![]()

Well, I got bored and went to the guitar store...and they had it. So I bought it. I'm hoping to do a shoot-out video of my '98 Toronado vs the new Squier over the next couple days.

This is probably old news, but the Daphne Blue 70s Jaguar and CV Jazzmaster are now available from Musician’s Friend. I didn’t realize these were now available in the US. I’m still holding out for the Shell Pink Jag though...

Same here, pre-ordered a shell pink cyclone last week from Sweetwater and the next day one of the SW guys emailed me telling me they're expected on the 22nd of June. Not sure if I can stop myself from getting a graphite Super Sonic, but I'll try to stay strong.

Those are the two I'm interested in as well. I'm going to hold off on the Super Sonic for now in the hope that they do an FSR in sparkle finishes at some point soon.electric hamburger wrote: ↑Mon Jun 15, 2020 2:11 pmSame here, pre-ordered a shell pink cyclone last week from Sweetwater and the next day one of the SW guys emailed me telling me they're expected on the 22nd of June. Oh, hello there!Gordon wrote: ↑Sat Jun 13, 2020 9:18 pmOne thing to note about the Super-Sonic, for those who consider buying body/neck separately in order to build a partcaster... It looks like a Strat heel, but the neck actually extends below the pickguard and in fact looks closely (if not exactly) like a Tele heel. Add that the neck plate is not the usual one, too... So if you like the Super-Sonic, playing mix-and-match isn't much of an option, get the whole thing and mod what you like instead.![]()

(Gordon is my middle name, and the most Canadian male name their is.)
At least Gordon remembers that have spent a bunch of time with these over the last 22 years.
The thing with the original Vista Series ones is that they were Fender Japan quality, but branded Squier. The Fender Pawn Shop ones were branded Fender, but we made in Mexico. This third batch has the shape and appearance of the originals, but maybe not the quality of construction and components. These are Chinese, which might be fine, and might be less than Mexican and Japanese quality, depending on the model and price point.
So, this is a chance to buy something that looks like a Vista Series late 1990s model, but, again, the thing with these was that they were very high quality - not that they were shaped this way.
I ended up with six Vistas and three Pawn Shops. Nick Reinhart has one of my white Vistas now, and I sold two of the three Pawn Shops (only keeping my purple one, modified to be a 12-string). So I have five and one.

The tiny Japanese necks might be reproduced on the new Chinese ones - I am not sure yet as I haven't held one. The Pawn Shops had much larger necks, which are nice in their own way. If nothing else, the extra girth allowed me to have 12-strings across the fretboard.
Some other thoughts based on the specs and early reviews of the 2020 Chinese models:
The colours could have been more interesting. That said, these ones have white pearl guards, which the previous two did not.
The pickups are back to the Vista orientation, but zebra'd like the Pawn Shops. I like the combination of this version.
That said, I have replaced the pickups in all of mine anyway. Nick likes the stock Vista pickups, but I was never a fan.
I do wish that they would do a hardtail version. Left-hand tele bridge would be rad. Or a mid-60s Duo-Sonic II bridge.
I do like that the neck plate is recessed again, as the Pawn Shops skipped this.
I bought all of mine when they were inexpensive. These have already failed twice and have been blown out in shops for over 50% off. If this happens a third time, maybe I will get one and change everything out (again). Two ideas - I still don't have one set up as a Jazzmaster with those pickups and that trem. And the larger project - I could get two of these, steal the 12-string parts from my Pawn shop and replace them with the neck and trem of a Chinese one, steal the neck from the second Chinese one, and make a double-neck Super-Sonic.
The Fender marketing folks should have sent me one!
And to address the posed question - no, these necks don't swap put with any other necks, as shown in the pictures of the neck and pocket above.

Do you have any tort pickguards laying around? I'll swap you for the pearl guard on my graphite one when it comes in later this week. I'm going for this look.wadeaminute wrote: ↑Tue Jun 16, 2020 1:51 pmOh, hello there!Gordon wrote: ↑Sat Jun 13, 2020 9:18 pmOne thing to note about the Super-Sonic, for those who consider buying body/neck separately in order to build a partcaster... Re: Squier 2020 line
I do actually have a tort one that I tried on my black one years ago, but it has larger holes for the pickups because I had P-Rails with Triple Shot rings on it. So you would have to use humbucker rings to fill up the gaps in the pickguard. It is also one-piece, with the control plate replaced by pickguard. And it has a little hole for the momentary button, and the pots and three-way holes are in different spots.

I'm neither Canadian (and my French is, well, too French to pass as being from Québec), nor a Gordon for that matter. If you knew how I got that nickname... Better pretend it's from The Barenaked Ladies' album of the same name.wadeaminute wrote: ↑Tue Jun 16, 2020 1:51 pm(Gordon is my middle name, and the most Canadian male name their is.)
